The first step the Dolphins took to building a sustainable winner was drafting Ryan Tannehill in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. Tannehill was the first quarterback selected in the first round by the franchise since Dan Marino, and his progression is promising.

There are three areas that comprise an offensive supporting cast. Coaching, playmakers and offensive line all affect how good a quarterback looks and performs.

Coaching
Philbin’s struggles with complex personalities have cost the Dolphins many talented players in addition to leaders. Besides the aforementioned group, receiver Brandon Marshall was traded away in the midst of his battle with borderline personality disorder. Cornerbacks Sean Smith and Vontae Davis were deemed too immature, and yet years later, each is a top-10 player at his position. Think Miami could use that type of talent?Relating this back to Tannehill, his public profile would be higher had the Dolphins made the playoffs in either of the last two seasons. But to reach the playoffs, Miami needed a stronger overall roster. And most of the impact players that Miami had acquired through the years were simply thrown aside by Philbin.

Supporting Cast
Comparing the group to teams in the playoffs, it’s easy to see that Miami is lacking. Its most comparable situation is the Carolina Panthers, who are with the Dolphins at the bottom of the league with surrounding casts. Carolina barely got into the playoffs, though, and likely wouldn’t have gotten in had its division been better. Its defense is also elite.

Offensive line
The Dolphins offensive line is still in shambles as well. Things should improve as Branden Albert comes back from injury and Ja’Wuan James goes back to his more natural right tackle spot. Mike Pouncey is a much better center than guard, and Miami can use Billy Turner at his spot in 2015.But still, Miami ranked as the worst pass-blocking unit in 2014 by PFF, allowing more pressures on the quarterback than any other team in the league. That’s unacceptable when considering that the line was a huge issue entering last offseason as well. Miami has to fix this immediately.

What a POS article.

No one has had success in dealing with Marshall. Not just Philbin.

Cornerbacks Sean Smith and Vontae Davis were deemed too immature, and yet years later, each is a top-10 player at his position.

Any player showing up drunk and out of shape to training camp likely gets the boot from any organization. Sean Smith is a top 10 CB.... OK.

But to reach the playoffs, Miami needed a stronger overall roster.

What a brilliant assessment.

"Its most comparable situation is the Carolina Panthers... Its defense is also elite."

I won't even bother giving that place credit with a click. Stay away from that trash site. Seriously.

Article starts off with a fail by mentioning Brandon Marshall as a loss to Tannehill's development. No one in their right freakin mind would think Marshall would have helped Tannehill develop with all of his antics and constant berating of the QB that he's open on every play...""But Brandon it was a running play, well the RB should have thrown it to me cause I was open"...no thanks. Zero playoff experience in 9 years...not entirely his fault but he isn't helping his team get to the post season either.

Sean Smith is not a top 10 player at his position either. That's ludicrous.

Carolina's defense is better than ours but it's not elite...it was last year but not this year.

I've pointed out many times that Tannehill was set up to fail by Ireland. He drafted Tannehill and did nothing to put talent around him. Tannehill's first year in the league he had Brian Hartline (a 4th round pick) and 4 undrafted free agents as his receiving corp. The offensive line was average and the running game that year was also average. Ireland's idea for helping Tannehill develop was drafting Jonathan Martin in the 2nd round. That was a major fail. Luck was drafted and he already had Reggie Wayne...then they drafted T.Y. Hilton, Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen, Vic Ballard and LeVon Brazill...the last two may didn't pan out but of the 10 draft picks 8 of them were offensive. RGIII was drafted and Washington had paid big money in free agency for Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan and Santana Moss...they also had Fred Davis at TE and drafted Alfred Morris.

I could go on but it's to infuriating to go over the ineptitude of Jeff Ireland and his lack of vision and inability to properly acquire talent.

I agree. Change the title to: "How Ireland failed Tannehill and why he is a PoS"

Make the Albert trade, just do that and nothing else and we're probably sitting on at least 2 extra wins as a team and at least one playoff experience.

Drafting Jamar Taylor and Dion Jordan was the better plan for this team than trading for Brandon Albert.:dphan:
