everyone is calling for us to sign guys like jordan gross and karlos dansby, but what makes you think they wont get resigned. i understand gross, he is a pro bowl LT and is going to require a bigger contract. Lina doesnt have a whole lotta cash left after they shell out the huge contract they are reportively going to give peppers. why would we sign a LT for pro bowl LT money to play RT for us. i know that he would be awesome on the line and it would be a great pickup to a point of weakness but for the price difference i would rather sign carey, if the difference is as far apart as i would suspect. and as for zona (and this is more of a question than an opinion for i dont know) why wouldnt they resign Dansby it seems he is the leader of the d. he is the radio wearer and is all over the field making tackles. do they not have the cash to get him, since boldin wants an extension. what are the ballparks that either one of these guys would be looking for this season?

Well, Gross may well be re signed. I'm of the mind that we need him. IT's kind of on Carey though, and how much money he wants. If he wants top money, we may as wel go after Gross, who will cost more, but, can play ORT, and, can swing over to OLT if something happens to long.

Jorday Gross will "NOT" be re-signed because CAR spent last year's FIRST round pick on OT Jeff OTah. THey drafted him the same year that they FRANCHISED TAGGED Jordan Gross. Notice they didn't re-sign Gross last season. They franchised him and drafted a future LT in Jeff Otah.

They also re-signed T Wharton. The OT that started at LT last season. He played LG this season with Jeff Otah playing RT with Gross at LT.

Now they can move either Wharton back to LT and keep Otah at RT or move Otah to LT and draft another RT.

Simply put....Jordan Gross WILL hit the market.....especially with J Peppers being a FA and needing to be re-signed or franchised.

So did I answer your post?

It will take elite LT money to sign Gross. We are already paying elite LT money to Jake Long. It does not make sense for us to be paying two T elite LT money.

This pretty much sums it up. Carolina also probably also wants to get the jump on resigning people like Williams dont want him to sniff the FA money.

Yeah Carolina has taken all the steps of a team who knows they are gonna lose a player.

And dont worry about the money if BP, JI and Coach Sparano will more than happily pay it. I wouldnt lose a moments sleep if the higest paid unit on our team was the O-line with Gross, Long, Smiley, Thomas and a few draft picks along the lines of Mac, Unger, Johnson, or Robinson this line could be utterly dominant.

If your biggest concern about Gross coming to us is money, then honestly it should be no concern at all.

The most important thing to us are picks... as in 'don't give them away'.

If you have a dominant line, your lack of dominance at other positions becomes less apparent. Same can be said for QB at times too. But even a great QB needs a good line around him or else he will be eating dirt all day... and that doesn't sound like a great QB to me.

That said, I think this front office is more likely to spend big money on both lines than any in the league because it is such a large part of what we want to do.

Remember, Sparano was an o-line coach before he became a great head coach. He knows that it all starts up front. I see us making a big signing or two for the lines and two more picked up early in the draft.

I love these conversations. Jake Long's job is secure. Noone elses is on either side of the line. An argument could be made that langford, Merling, and Thomas the jury is still out on because our staff would like to see more time from them.

the main area of focus needs to be on both of our lines. now of course it is going to boil down to the talent we got, how much it is going to cost to keep it, in comparison to to talent available and the price it would cost us to bring it here.

There is absolutly noone on either line that is irreplacable and if there is a reasonable opprotunity to do it it will more then likely trump other choices at different postions in this off season. Jake Long is the only player on our line that is safe.

I would like to see us bring in Jordan Gross and maybe even Karlos Dansby assuming he's not resigned. I think we will draft a DT first round. Maybe Terrance Cody. I believe with the signing of Gross, our line would be nearly perfect.

LT Jake Long (All-Star)
LG Justin Smiley (Good)
C Samson Satele (Average) Wouldn't be suprised to see him replaced
RG Donald Thomas (Unproven) I think he is the real deal
RT Jordan Gross (All-Star)

On paper it looks like an outstanding line to me... I hope it looks this good on the field.

What about Smiley? I think he did a good enough job to warrant him being here a while.

I agree though, Jake Long is safe. I believe Smiley is here for a while. Getting a guy in FA like Gross would solidify both tackle positions for A while.

Leaving us room to look at C/RG and D-line in the draft.

It's nice to know guys like Nmandi and Suggs might hit the FA market. But I believe, kinds like you it looks like, that we need to get the D-line and O-line done first. Having 2 solid O-lineman isn't enough for me to justify going after other positions.

It takes money to have good players. Would you really want to watch Carey get abused for less money or Gross abusing DEFENDERS for a lot of money?

I knew someone was bring up Smiley. He is good and I dont think he is a priority as far as replacing him goes. I dont think he is great and if our staff saw an improvement at his postion they would do it. Im not knocking him, I just dont think his job is locked. I fully expect to see him on our 09 roster but would not be shocked if he got moved or became a b/u to a better player. It really is a question of who is available this off season. I do agree though Smiley, while healthy was decent at his postion and it is not urgent that we upgrade there yet.

staying in school and bj raji will be gone by then. i think go alex mack, C or another position in the first and go for brace in the later rounds. but we cant and wont get cody because he is playing for bama

i think alex mack is a strong possibility of them taking him first.

Jordan Gross is well worth it. We could actually re-sign Carey AND get Gross, but move Carey to RG, or just make him a backup. Im sure SOMEONE will take Carey, but after he got abused so much, whos gonna give him the money he wants??? His best bet is to stay here and compete for RG with Donald Thomas.

And considering our OL didnt block at all against the Ravens, having Long and Gross at the ends, will improve our OL SIGNIFICANTLY.

Lets not forget tho, Smiley and Thomas were out. I think both of them are great, its Center we need to work on. Satele is decent, but he needs to improve. We should give Satele this season to improve, or hes out.
