I dont see Middle Tennesee State vying for a national championship anytime soon. Does anybody see Muschamp leaving for this position? What does it mean to the phins if he does?

if your an assistant coach in any sport...your ultimate goal is to call the shots for yourself and be a head coach....now Muschamp might not take the job out of loyalty to nick or for any other reason...but it will be tempting

It would have to be A LOT of $$$ for him to leave, IMO.

I don't think Muschamp wants money -- I think he wants his own high level college team or even a pro team some day. This is the framework I think we're looking at:

1) Middle Tennessee makes a decision. If they don't offer the job to him, this was just good experience for him learning about interviews for head coaching positions. If they do offer him the job, then:
2) Nick makes a choice. Is Will ready to be DC? If he is, I think Muschamp will become the team's DC or get a promise that he will become the DC for the 2006 season. If he isn't, Will goes off to find his own way at Middle Tennessee.

I think some coaches are drawn to money. For instance, I doubt Houck wants to be a head coach given his career path. A fat contract can motivate him to come to your team. A young go getter like Muschamp is a totally different story.

Good rundown. What exactly does Muschamp do now? They have him listed as assistant coach. Does that mean he shadows Saban and makes sure the clipboard is always within arms reach? I guess what I am getting at is, How will it affect us if he does leave>

He calls the defenses as of right now. He's sort of a DC in training.

Not everything is about "national championships". It's about getting a start as a head coach there. Then maybe getting a bigger job at an SEC, BIG 12, Big East, or ACC school. Then getting an NFL head coaching job.

Ya gotta start somewhere!

Agreed, I guess I was more worried about Saban's staff being picked apart ala New England... After reading some posts in a similar thread, I am seeing the light...

All staffs get picked apart every year in some way shape and form. It's no big deal

Urban Meyer started at Bowling Green...then moved up to Utah...then moved up to Florida...and if he wins at UF and aspires to coach in the pros, he could get a shot at that in the future.

Saban started as an assistant in the NFL...then moved to cupcake Michigan State...then up to LSU...then up to us. It's the natural progression.

This isn't to say that Muschamp will leave, but that's why he would.

For the record Urban Meyer would never make it as an NFL head coach. He is a sytematic coach and his system would never work in the pros.
