Why isnt Saban trying to figure if cleo can play??? we are out of the playoffs and dont give me that crappy excuse that we ride on a 4 game winning streak
gus played better in recent but he his in no way the future... we got to find out what we will do in the future....

The only explanation I have is that Saban will go for someone outside the organisation (draft pick or Free agent)

Because he's the coach thats why. He does see him play on wed, thurs, and friday each week.

I do not care some players look great in practice and suck it up on gameday

Isnt this contrary to your arguement?

I wouldnt mind seeing him play, however, I doubt he has a real good feel for linehan's offense yet. Being #3 on the depth and only being here for a couple of weeks, he probably has had very limited visibility to what the starting team actually does come gametime. JMO

Isn't the point of the thread "why can't WE see Cleo play"? Saban knows what he has in him. Unfortunately, YOU AND I won't know until pre-season of next year.

In the words of HERM

YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!!!

Why throw him to the wolves?

He's had virtually no time with the 1st string offense to develop any sort of rythm. Heck, it took Gus 10 weeks to finally get things rocking. No reason to put him out there and end up having the fans and media pick him apart all offseason.

Besides, doing so would undermine the emphasis he's put on ignoring record and score and concentrating on the process. The players are just now buying into the preaching... and I'd rather not screw that up.

Because playing a 3rd string QB w/o even 1 training camp in this offense under his belt could inhibit his ability to evaluate every other player on the roster.

If he was really THAT good, he would have played a long time ago. If the guy doesn't show Saban anything in practice, what would make him think he would suddenly explode in a game?

Well maybe, just maybe the coach who makes these decisions (not the knee jerk fans thankfully) dosen't like what he sees out of Lemon at this point. Should a coach field a QB that he dosen't feel is ready to play?

Hell, lets just take open auditions from the fans.
1 fan can play 4 downs at QB "just to see what he has"!

Good coaches rarely subscribe to the "I don't know give him a shot" logic that fans use. Fortunately, good coaches rely on facts like what they see in practice and the mastery of the offense that the QB shows in the film room.

No, that's not fair either. According to some AJ and Sage defenders on this board, 4 downs is not enough to judge that fan. A full game as starter should , oh wait, Sage had that and he still deserves a shot. Well, multiple games starting, maybe at least half a season, now that should be enough... oh, wait, AJ had that and he was never given a fair chance (I wonder when he'll start in San Diego, or be traded for high pick). No you have to give that fan at least a full season starting, although if you do that, they will soon be clamoring for fan #2, who hasn't had a chance to show his talents yet!
