I was simply wondering if anyone else had noticed.

Originally I believed the correct call was made but it is clear after watching the play again that Doug Gabriel is the one guilty of PI not Will Allen.

Gabriel had both arms around Allen in a bear hug with two fists full of his jersey while Allen is looking back with one arm extended toward the ball.

Gabriel was attempting to prevent Allen from making a play on the ball and Allen gets called for PI. Priceless.

Coach Saban was completely justified in being outraged. It was a bad call.

I disagee with everything you've said. Allen never turned his head until right before the ball hit him in the back all most at the same time. His shoulders were still square with Gabriel who was face to face with Allen. Clearly he was playing the receiver not the ball thus the PI call. Allen couldn't have played the ball if he wanted to because his back was turned to the ball. If you play a receiver like that it's going to draw the PI call 10 out of 10 times. I my self think Brady saw the way Allen was covering Gabriel and just thru the ball at him knowing full well he would get the PI call. Way to go Tom!

It looked to me like Gabriel induced the contact by grabbing hold of Allen's arm. That is my only greivance is that they were tangled and there was nothing Will could do.

I disagree with you, even though it doesn't matter at all at this point. I have also watched that play several times cause I wondered why Saban was so furious, and Phinanthropist described it perfectly. Will Allen had his head turned way before the ball arrived and he was being surrounded by Gabriel's both arms holding him to not make a play for the ball so it wouldn't be intercepted, cause it would've been or knocked down at least.

It is not surprising you disagree.

First of all, the ball didn't hit Allen in the back, you are wrong there to begin with.

Allen was playing a trail technique on Gabriel and was in his hip pocket as the ball was thrown. The ball was thrown behind and to the right of Gabriel. Gabriel had stopped and attempted to turn back for the ball but Allen had position between the two so Gabriel grabs Allen with both hands as Allen is attempting to make a play for the ball. Blatant Offensive PI.

Watch it again with an unbiased eye and you will see this for yourself. Gabriel has Allen in a bear hug. How is that Defensive PI?

The bottom line is Allen is unfairly being criticized when he made a nice play.

You know I could accept this theory of Gabriel holding Allen so he could make a play on the ball if Allen was actually facing the ball or even if he was facing 90 degrees to the ball but when your back is facing the ball well thats a tough one to say he was going to make a play on the ball. He'd have to be one hell of an athlete to catch or even knock down a ball that hit him in the back. This call was clearly Defensive PI and it isn't even questionable.
You can't face mask the receiver even without contact when your facing away from the ball and into the face of the receiver. Its still PI.

I think Allen was callled for the PI before Gabriel grabbed him I agree that Gabriel grabbing him was offensive PI but Gabriel stopped short and Allen ran into him they called it faceguarding on NFL network and they all said it was a good call so I dont really know what to think about this.

Again, I have to side with Coach Saban. What is Will Allen supposed to do? You are chasing someone for 20+ yards staying as close as you can to him without touching him and all of a sudden the guy stops dead in his tracks, turns around and grabs you with both hands.

If that is Defensive PI then the rule is complete BS.

Wow, I've never heard of that faceguarding rule - it sucks!!! Imagine now it turns out that corners can't even get close to the receivers because if they are looking back and then run into him because he stops, you can't run into him while you are trying to make a play for the ball!!! That's plain out ridiculous rule and the NFL is getting a little out of hand protecting offensive players these days. You saw today on NFL network when Rich Eisen asked the head of the officials that soon you won't be able to touch the quarterback anywhere with your helmet, and Pereira just shrugged his shoulders and said its gonna stay that way. But the reality is offense means money for the NFL, so protect your assets I guess.

LOL wow I can't believe you typed that. So you're chasing someone for 20+ yards staying as close to him as you can without touching him and he stops dead in his tracks. See you left out the fact that Allen actually ran into Gabriel face to face. When you run into a receiver and your not looking back at the ball which is in the air its called Pass interference. Follow along here and you'll eventually get this.

the rule isnt perfect, the pats fan is right. take off the aqua and orange glasses for a second, would you be bitching if samuel and chambers were involved and it went against ne?

Well it really don't matter now it's all water under the bridge. :D
