The Dolphins were not sure of Jones' plans as voluntary practices wrapped up on Thursday.

"I haven't [received an indication],” coach Adam Gase said. "I don't know. You'd have to ask him.”
Jones is coming off a career year in 2015 and led the Dolphins in tackles (135) and interceptions (five). He made his first Pro Bowl and is due to make $7.25 million this season. The Dolphins can begin fining Jones next week: he could owe approximately $76,000 if he misses all three days of minicamp.
So far this offseason the Dolphins have gone with Michael Thomas and Isa Abdul-Quddus as their starting safeties.
"It doesn't hold us back," defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said. "Obviously, again, that's a contract matter. That's not my area. But it won't hold us back, because when guys aren't here, I treat them as they're injured for the week. I don't even think about it, really. I move on with guys who're here."

Is he holding the Dolphins to ransom? Will they take it seriously or is this just bravado? I just think it's indicative of agents putting their 10cents into the mix and stirring the pot. It's called a contract last time I looked. Why can't the NFL stop this mercenary attitude which allows players to hurt their team? You would think a professional athletes contract is binding, legally if not morally.

**** him. Dude's known for holding out, and the dolphins are not competing for anything significant next year

Team first, YOU second. If he's a true team player he'll show up. That's why I loved getting rid of Brandon Marshall and Wallace, I hated those guys.

Well, to be fair, teams routinely cut players loose well before the contract is up. So, it goes both ways.

That being said, he's only hurting himself once fines start adding up. Sitting the year out would simply be money lost that he'd never be able to recoup even over the course of his entire career. I'd expect that at least by TC he'll be back.

Well said, Bumpus. Nothing wrong with holding out, but if you overestimate your value, you end up looking like a dope.

Most of the people who criticize this type of move wish they could have that type of power at their job. Instead of waiting and hoping that he gets a 3% cost of living increase, he has the power to do what he's doing and not lose his job. That makes people jealous. The other part of it is the selfishness of fans demanding that the player gets back on the field because it suits their wants.

Not to mention a year of his PRIME.

We're selfish? No. He's under, contract for 2 more years. If you didn't like the contract you shouldn't sign it. In what other business can you not live up to your contract and be ok?

Re-negotiations happen all the time before a contract has expired, not just with sports. That's business. It's also funny how fans typically don't have a problem with the team terminating a contract before it's over. All of a sudden, the "YOU SIGNED A CONTRACT!!!!" rhetoric goes away in that instance.

I could understand looking out for himself if he wasn't the 9th highest paid safety (SS and FS) in the nfl, with more of his contract guaranteed (53.5%) than anyone in the top 25.

Dude has more $$ guaranteed to him than Earl Thomas. Just come to camp, and try this out next year when it makes more sense.

I have been posting about locking him up until age 34 all off season. This is exactly the kind of performance and character that you want to reward. It's good for the team.

Paying a guy like Brandon Albert or Mike Pouncey 10 mil plus a year is demoralizing to the team. They aren't worth it....neither is Tannehill worth 20 mil plus....WTH???
Jones deserves the money, and the players know that.

Let's lock this guy up and have him retire a Dolphin.

If he doesn't play against Seattle we lose, that's all there is to it. If he is the spy and frequent blitzer on Wilson we have a good shot IMO. Without him, the outlook is dismal.

This is the exact same situation at Cam Chancellor last year and how did that work out for him?, two years left on his contract and looking for a new deal. He has no leverage Cam lasted until game 2, between the fines and money he will lose he will be back.

Character? You do realize we are talking about Reshad Jones here.

Reshad and yourself are both overestimating the value of a SS. He is a good player and he is also very replaceable.

How is rewarding him good for the team? Guy has two years left on his deal and this is an entirely new defense . . . He only hurts himself by coming in and being a lost cause . . . But then again he doesn't like to stick to the script much anyways so this is right up his alley. This isn't Kevin Coyle running the ship tho.

Only in Dolphin land do we have a "good shot" at beating Seattle, in Seattle, on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 . . . Can we pull it off, anything is possible, but With or wiout Reshad Jones doesn't mean that chance is a good one. Guy has been in the lineup the entire time with this crap defense . . . He is not he difference maker you make him out to be.

I would seriously understand this more if there was only one year left on the deal, but with two years left and a new defense, I think Reshad is just a scared little bitch who is worried about his value going down this year because he'll need to play more team ball and not leave his CB's out to dry and play stat ball.

I really hope Miami doesn't mve an inch in regards to him and his contract as the highest paid SS in the NFL.
