it seems like this year under Cam, there is a hunger for speed. Hagan is not the fastest receiver on our team but he is a younger and faster version with more potential than M. Booker. His 40 speed can vary from 4.45 to 4.50 depending where you read.

here is some of the many prospect articles i found on him.

Derek Hagan, 6-2, 208, Arizona State:Derek Hagan is a very talented player with good hands and unbelievable athleticism. He is not however a workout monster and did not have a good postseason which has dropped him down many boards. Make no mistake though Hagan will be a very good receiver in the NFL.

What the big boys are saying:
ESPN/Scout:
Hagan has had another exceptionally productive season as a senior in 2005 and will have led the Sun Devils in receiving in each of his last three seasons (2003-'05). As a senior in 2005, Hagan finished with 1,210 yards and eight TDs on 77 receptions. Hagan does not possess explosive speed and he will occasionally fight the ball as a receiver. However, he has adequate-to-good size, is a savvy route runner with impressive quickness and instincts, and he will pick up some valuable yards after the catch. Hagan also shows good intangibles, as he is an experienced, durable, high-character player with good leadership skills. Hagan does not grade out as an elite receiver prospect but he has the qualities of a No. 2 possession receiver in the NFL and he should be ready to contribute immediately. We think the first round is a reach, but Hagan is worth selecting in the late-second, early-third round range of the 2006 draft FoxSports: Has good size for the position and caught the ball consistently enough in college to set Pac-10 career reception record. However, Hagan struggled horribly with drops during the entire week of practices at the Senior Bowl. He regained some believers when he ran a 4.45 in the 40 at Combine, but again appeared to struggle with his hands. Mixed reviews, but could be taken earlier than listed

I think Hagan will push Booker out eventually, but at best at the end of this year. I think they will begin to work Hagan in. But Booker is a solid receiver who is much more polished than Hagan. I think if Hagan shows enough improvement he could win the job next year.

i think hagan has a bright future in miami. he just needs some time go grow and that could just be the first half of this season. him and ginn for our future receivers is a pretty good thought.

Chambers- pretty fast
Ginn- unheard of fast
Hagan - fast
Booker - Average
Sam - fast
Kelly - very fast

Look at the players we brought in this year, they are Fast ie Ginn,Kelly,Sam,l. Booker etc

Look at who is not here anymore ie welker, mcmike, etc

I am very excited to see

Chambers
Hagan
Ginn

I think Booker has much more athleticism than Hagan..... and a much better reciever in every area!
Hagan didn't show much last year with his opportunities, and Booker was one of the best players on the team. When it comes down to crucial 3rd and long plays....I want Booker in the game more than anyone on our roster!
All this trade or cut Booker stuff is ridiculous...especially when the QB is very unsettled. Who cares about speed.... I want playmakers and Booker is one without question.

Hagan showed all the tools of a very good receiver last year. His speed, quickness, route running, and intelligence were fantastic for a rookie. If he spends the summer catching balls from the ball machine and becomes consistant, there is no doubt he will eventually beat out Booker by the first game. However, that is a big if, because Booker is as reliable as they come with his hands and WRs that drop the ball. I think Hagan has a bright future.

Chambers is faster than Hagan. Chambers ran around a 4.33 when he was drafted so figure now he probably runs closer to a 4.4...Hagan runs around a 4.5

I still think Chambers Hagan Ginn will be the future starters

Got a link to that?

Will Hagan start ahead of M. Booker this year? Yes. Miami should really be working on a trade of Booker to Tennessee. The Titans need a veteran receiver. I don't know what they'd want for him... I would hope an '08 draft pick.

I have to disagree here Fin. I'll give you Booker did play better last year but Hagan, to me, is his replacement. The guy, when given the opportunity, ran nice routes and got open. He didnt always catch the ball but was a rookie and I havn't thrown in the towel on him yet. Hagan actually has probably learnt alot from Booker.

Hagan is still a little too rough around the edges to take Marty's spot. He has problems getting open without making a lot of contact outside of five yards, which tells me that the pro game hasn't slowed down enough for him yet. Another grooming season and he should be ready to produce.

Booker is a good receiver. He isn't the fastest, but he is a playmaker and somehow always seems to find a way to get behind the defense. Given our potentially pathetic OL and complete toss up at QB, I will take the savvy vet over the sophomore receiver this season.

I mean I'm happy to have Hagan....knowing there isn't a huge drop off in ability if Booker isn't on the field. Hagan caught a heck of a lot of balls while at ASU, and probably in front of more fans than the almost empty stadium in Miami. But he did what he was suppose to do, run nice routes, get separation, etc. Hopefully this year he comes on....I'm not sold on being a rookie as a reason for dropping balls
