Will Rosen Have More Around Him In Miami Than His Rookie Year?

I think our situation will be better than the one in AZ last year.

-The coaches and schemes in theory should be better. Hard to be worse than it was in Arizona last year.

-The Dolphins have a year of pro tape on Rosen, which the Cardinals didn’t have. Hopefully the Dolphins can use this to tailor things a bit more to his strengths.

-Rosen should have a good mentor in Ryan Fitzpatrick.

-The weight of expectations, while still high, won’t be to the level they were in Arizona. By all accounts no one is looking to Rosen to be the savior of this team like they were hoping for when the Cardinals drafted him.

Now these things are not necessarily “talent” assessments...to be honest I have no clue what this Dolphins team is ultimately going to look like on day 1...but the things I mentioned above should 100% factor in and make life a little less hellish for Rosen in Miami.

So if we go 4-12 and Rosen looks legit, you are going to be comfortable saying...that is my QB for the next decade, lets pass on an elite 2020 QB? No matter how good he looks this season, I still want our top pick to be QB. There is almost nothing Rosen could do to make me comfortable enough to pass on a QB next year.

If we go 4-12 then we just might have the wrong people running the show.

Its a great question. The bottom line is that Miami doesn't have a lot of talent on offense. Perhaps a tad more than Arizona, but in the same neighborhood.

I do think the system the Dolphins will likely play on offense is a good fit for Rosen, though. A quick, short passing game like New England is one he could thrive in.

It also looks like Flores wants to run the ball based off the draft. That helps any quarterback.

I'll say this: he's in a much different position than he was in his rookie year in multiple ways.

The offensive line is better here because of Tunsil alone but, as well all know, this line needs a ton of work and he's not going to a team with a good OL.

His weapons are better here in the sense that he has more options. He had the future HOFer in Fitz and a solid weapon in Kirk but literally nothing else at pass catcher.

The coaching has to be better here by default. Wilks was in over his head and McCoy was a disaster and would not adapt. The Cards best player (Johnson) was completely wasted as McCoy preferred running straight up the middle rather than use Johnson to his best ability (outside runner/pass catcher). Leftwich was rushed as an OC and, by then, the season was over. I never loved Jim Caldwell as a HC but he's worked with some good QBs and got the best out of Flacco. He's going to be Rosen's best coach by far.

Is the situation better? In some ways yes and in some ways no. Let's be honest, the kid gets a clean slate but this could actually be his last shot at being a starting QB in the NFL. Everyone and their brother knows that Miami will select a QB in 2020 if he is not the answer. The pressure is on. In the end, I'm a fan of the trade (love the trade down/getting the Saints 2nd round next year). Go ball out, kid.

If we go 4-12 then we just might have the wrong people running the show.

So you would completely dismiss our current talent level and conclude we may have the wrong people running the show?

Coaching clearly matters but you need a certain amount of talent too.

4-12 with the talent we currently have on the roster especially at key positions is respectable for a first time HC.

Josh Rosen has to feel like the unluckiest SOB on the planet to go from that situation to this one.

However, as you can clearly tell by now, something wasn’t right about his situation in Arizona. The brass obviously never believed in him to begin with. Not even when they traded up for him. He wouldn’t be in Miami if they did.

To me, that has to be what changes the most about his situation. He has people that might believe in him him now. Talent is not his issue. But he has to forget about colleges and their shoe deals and set aside his dislike for the President and whatever other things he can’t control that he lets get under his skin - and focus on being a football player and being the best QB and leader he can be. You can be great, son. But you have to work. Just saying you're great doesn't make you great. They all say it. You have to want it more than everybody else does. That's what makes you great. Nobody can make you want it. Not Brian Flores or Chris Grier or Bill Belichick or Vince Lombardi. Only Josh Rosen really knows if he wants it more than everybody else.

You get a clean slate. A cleaner slate than any other QB that I can remember ever having. If what you just experienced doesn't make you want it - then you just don't want it.

Take the lessons you've learned as a young pro, and go be great. They're all watching you and they all don't believe you can do it. Let that be what gets under your skin. This you can control.
Great write up Slimm. Just fantastic!!!

Anyone who says we are worse then arizona truly needs to stop watching football, as bad as last year was we were no where near az bad. And guess what we wont be again. I believe we now have a competent staff not a bunch of coke heads with egos the size of buildings.

I would take the under 4 if I were betting at this stage. i dont understand how people on here think we are a better team right now than we were last year? We are positioning for the future yes, but this roster and this year are going to be painful.

Its not that I think we are better talent wise than we were last year, I think we will beat teams worse than us and maybe out scheme a couple of teams this year with competent game plans. I do think we have explosive receivers and 2 home run running backs. We always think we are the worst team but always win 6-8 games and draft middle of the road. It will be no different this year. Remember didnt vegas have us winning like 2-3 games last year?

The vegas line ended up around 6.5 prior to the start of last season, so it was pretty spot on. I hear what you are saying, and I don't go by what I read other "experts" saying...but last year I bet big on the over bc I felt good about our roster (better than the general media outside of miami). This year I think we are in big trouble so I would guess 4 wins. Keep in mind we have 2 first time coordinators and a first time HC. There will be growing pains.

My whole issue with this trade is...there is no way we will be able to evaluate him in 1 year when it is time to make a decision on the 2020 QB. Our line and team are worse than AZ, so everyone will say...just give him time...he will be great when he has a good line in front of him...all lines we have heard for the last 7 yrs with Tannehill really.

I don't mind the trade for the player, just hated what we gave up, and still don't understand the plan. Rosen will be back in the exact same situation come 2020 that he was in now (playing backup to a top drafted QB). If he is ok being a backup then thats fine, but who knows.

Good... if he fails I’d rather tank for Trevor in 2021 than Tua in 2020

I'm usually one to point out the holes in the OL, so this is a little bit of uncharted territory for me, but I have more faith in this OL than in the past. Personnel wise we still have holes. I like Michael Deiter and think he can be a great LG and complement Laremy Tunsil as well. Is he Josh Sitton? No, of course not, but we only had Josh for 1 game, and Deiter is an iron-man having played the most games (54 in a row) of any offensive lineman at OL-U (Wisconsin). That grinding style is not easy on a player, so durability looks to be a strong suit of his … and that's a welcome change from the OL we've had in the past who are always injured, like Sitton, Albert, Pouncey, and James. All of those guys were good OL, but they kept missing too many games, and our off-the-street patchwork replacements simply weren't ever good enough. Deiter should be there, and he will be a solid LG.

Kilgore is a prime example. Our OL looked good when Sitton and Kilgore were healthy, then they got injured and it sucked again. Well, Kilgore is back … I had hoped we would upgrade from him, but we haven't yet, so we need to hope he stays healthy. Jesse Davis looks to be a year more seasoned and back to his better position, RT, where he has had some solid games. Hopefully he's better than last year … but that's only hope. RG is wide open, and the kid from Jacksonville looks to have promise … and would be an upgrade from the weakest member of our OL last year … but we'll have to wait and see on that one as well. Not ideal personnel, but I'd say improved over us last year and over Arizona's last year.

Scheme. This is where we improved! The Patriots system is HARD. It requires precision like we used to have from Arnsparger's defenses. But when all of the players are smart and on the same page, it just works. First, it requires the ability to run against pass-stacked defenses, such as 6 DB's. That means our OL all need to be able to open running lanes, every one of them. We need to temporarily become a dominant running team against those 6 DB defenses and effective running against 5 DB's. Force them out of their speed-coverage packages and back into a base defense, or they will be dominated by us. We're bringing in guys who can run block, with power, leverage and some technique … this can work. And for when we face short yardage and need to run, our offense includes a FB to help blow open holes for the RB. We also employ TE's who can block, like Dwayne Allen. Running the ball will be a real aspect of this offense, and we will force defenses to stop our running game first.

Then, we can pass against defenses that are not stacked against the pass. Sure, 3rd and long we can't manipulate that way, but this offense is built to avoid getting into 3rd and longs. With our quick WR's, we can get the ball out of the QB's hands quickly and don't need to sustain pass protection for too long. By keeping defenses out of those pass-stacked packages, the QB should have more options and the WR's/TE's/RB's more space to get open quickly. This opens up the short passing game, which is the bread and butter of this offense. If they clamp down on it, we need to revert to the running offense and show them that they're going to lose if they don't stop the run.

But ultimately, this is a _very_ QB-driven offense. All of the crucial decision making resides with the QB, including making hot reads, calling the defense, audibles, pace, etc. If Josh Rosen is as smart as we all believe he is, this requires that intelligence. If he desires mental challenges, this is it. The reasons why our front office wanted him are clear … he has the arm talent, he has the ability to make progression reads, and most importantly, he's highly intelligent and eager to use it to rise to the challenge mentally. This offense was built for Tom Brady, and it places more control in the QB's hands than any other current NFL offense. If Rosen is up to the challenge, he can control his own destiny. We believe he has the tools to do so, and we hope he rises to the challenge.

The OL will be put in great positions because of this offensive scheme. They will have to prove they can effectively run block. But once they've done that, they should be in a good spot as pass protectors because the receivers will not be smothered by 6 DB's … there will be open guys for Rosen to hit, and usually hit quickly. The OL will not have to hold their pass blocks too long. Delays and long-developing stunts will not be as effective against us, because the ball should be out of Rosen's hands quickly. This scheme will make pass protection easier, and establish a running game. OL love run blocking, and every OL loves the idea of not having to hold their pass protection for too long. Our stats should improve.

there will be but there will also be 5 or 6 teams that will be worse I think, I think we beat the jets twice and buffalo once at least, this coaching staff really had there number up in new england. I will be shocked if we dont win 6-8 games, its inevitable.
