[h=2]Branden Albert is a pro-bowl left tackle and a big part of the Miami Dolphins offensive line. Will he be a part of that line in 2017?[/h]Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel sat down with general manager Chris Grier and Mike Tannenbaum to talk a little about the play of Jay Ajayi and the offensive line and while neither of the Dolphins executives made any major statements regarding Albert’s future, it’s not too hard to at least sense that something might be in the works.

Albert has two years left on his current contract and that seems like a good place to start when talking about his future.

Kelly pointed out that Tannenbaum has called this “rebuild” (my words not his) a two-year “blueprint” (his words not mine) and that any player or players not part of the future could be gone by 2018.

That brings us to Branden Albert.

Albert will cost the Dolphins $10.6 million in cap space this year.

If the Dolphins release him they will save over $7 million and will carry $3.4 million in dead money. Miami however is fortunate as they have Laremy Tunsil waiting to be moved outside.

Tunsil showed that he could handle both the guard and tackle positions during the course of the 2016 season.

A college left tackle, Tunsil was a “can’t pass up player” in the draft and the Dolphins watched him fall into their laps. If the Dolphins are ready for that move to LT, Albert becomes expendable.

Furthering the conundrum with Albert is his injury history.

Albert has not played a full season since his arrival in Miami but when he is in the game, the Dolphins offensive line plays far better.

Kelly also points out that the Dolphins have been “dropping hints” of a change along the line without saying exactly what that change might be.

We've struggled so much with trying to fix this O-line I'm not sure this is the best move. If we were to sign an OG in free agency (and I don't know who's available) then maybe I can see it but I wouldn't bank on a draft pick. Plus we really don't have enough draft picks. I'm pretty sure we're already going to be replacing Bushrod at RG.

Anything is possible but I caution everybody that "smoke screen" season is in full effect. Front Office's will say and do things that don't even make sense just to give an appearance of an agenda that they truthfully don't have.

Not saying this isn't possible because Branden is oft injured and costly but they are doing a lot of talking about the offense thus far (OLine, STills, TE, etc.) and very little talking about the defense. Last year we heard A LOT of talking about the defense and very little about the offense and look at that draft. Just sayin.

What if the "smoke screen" is to see if anyone bites and tries to trade the Dolphins?

I don't think Albert will get much in terms of trade value...4th round pick?...but you get his salary off the books and get an extra pick that might be worth it.

Thats a good point. As some one else pointed out to me earlier, this draft isn't "loaded" at OT and its not like quality LT's are sitting out there in FA for the pickings. A contending team that is looking for that veteran blindside protector without giving up a day 1/2 pick or a bank breaking FA salary could certainly be injured.

Albert 2 years/18 million with no guaranteed money is certainly not bad and you'd only give up a 4th . . . hell a compensatory 4th if you want.

It is very possible. I'd welcome it but not a fan of cutting him loose for nothing.

Restructure his deal and keep him as a backup. He is a leader in the lockerroom and a good mentor for the younger lineman. And he is still very good when healthy. There are some good guards available in FA.

If Albert is cut then you need to go all-in for Ronald Leary AND Larry Warford. And sign a decent veteran center while you're at it.

There will also be some cuts out there that will certainly interest the Dolphins. They feasted on those last year to help them with the compensatory formula. Not as many high end free agents this year but even Stills could garner a 3 or a 4 if we don't sign a cumulative amount of uncut UFAs in the process.

Like it or not Albert is still a top tier player. He does a very good job at a premier position of LT ... when he is healthy. That production surely means that another club is willing to pay him far more than $7M a year. Honestly, after factoring in the dead cap that's all we get from cutting him ... $7M. IMHO, it's not worth it from a talent standpoint to cut him.

Add in the fact that Gase wants to reward players for things like Albert has done, taking our star Tunsil under his wing despite the troubled star being his direct competition. Cutting Albert sends a message to future veterans ... suggesting that they should NOT help their younger counterparts. I don't think that's the way Gase prefers to go.

So, Albert is likely to get his money this year, and probably next year face the re-negotiation or be cut dilemma. It can't last forever, but I suspect the coaching staff wants him around another year. It sends a valuable message to future players. And, you're not going to replace his talent level at that price. All you save is the fear of missing 6+ games from injuries.

Cant depend on him. Cut or shake him down and move to guard

Keep him, yes he has injury issues but lets get a guard and a bit of depth with continuity at the other 4 positions and it would be a good step forward. For me replace Bushrod and leave the other 4 intact even considering the injury proneness of Albert and Pouncey.

One more year of service. Then we can draft one of the good LG coming out next season.
