With this overblown Martin fiasco likely bringing about a lot of new rules and changes, along with news of Tony Dorsett being diagnosed for CTE and guys like Moffitt quitting because he didn't think the risk is worth it, can this game survive?

I am starting to have very serious doubts short of them eliminating the "tackle" aspect of the game.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a huge increase in the popularity and viewership of soccer in the next decade in the US. I've already started to see a lot more US soccer fans now that it's easier to stream games from the Euro Leagues.

if pure trash like martin wins cases like this one he's about to present the leagues in serious trouble going forward...the nfl has to nip this is in the bud from the get go...you cannot set this kind of precedent for others to follow

write something into the cba do whatever you got to do...but don't allow this fraud to take a dime

i am wondering this also... rush limbaugh actually has talked about this in the past and i thought he was streching it but the whole "sissyfication" of football i can see coming now. pretty soon it will be flag football because you cant hit anyone high, pretty soon because of all the knee and leg injuries you wont be able to hit low and then wala... flag football.

the sissification of the game is definitely in progress already...hell though it's not just a football problem...it's a country problem...we are raising a generation of sissies...

sucks

I think we're gradually moving toward flag football.

I think u have a legitimate concern when it comes to injuries but people acting like cracking down on hazing and stupid rituals will somehow castrate the sport are beyond rational thought on the zero effect it will have on the play on the field.

Two hand touch.....but guys, don't touch too hard! And I guess if it isn't tackle anymore, they may as well let women play too!

The NFL and NFLPA are going to BURY Jon Martin here. They might bury the Dolphins management too, but they are going to BURY Jon Martin. He is going to get stomped on here.

There's a reason he just retained a lawyer who has been extremely antagonistic toward the NFLPA. They are going to protect the money. I promise you that. The NFL and NFLPA are going to unite to destroy this guy.

And he deserves it.

It will exist but the popularity will wane. With these rule changes its about 35% less fun to watch football games now. I expect it to only get worse.

All I know is I bought NBA League Pass this year, am running a fantasy basketball team for the first time, and enjoying the hell out of it. The NBA is getting more and more talented, and the officials aren't deciding games. The games are on more often and due to the structure of the league even if your team sucks its fun to watch. I'm a Magic fan, and I'm glad they're bad, because they're one great draft pick away, and in the meantime they have some nice young pieces to watch every night.

Hell I might enjoy the NBA more already.

If Martin is successful, it could bring more lawsuits. But beyond that, this will change how coaches interact with the team and players... You think guys like Coughlin would be able to stick around in a climate post-Martin? Coaches will need to watch what they say and do around everyone. The locker room is going to turn into a stuffy office environment. The game, at some point, will stop being fun to players, and along with safety issues, people will start to lose interest. More young kids will be pushed toward other sports by their parents and peers.

I am telling you, soccer will finally begin to gain traction in this country as the popularity of football declines due to all the changes on and off the field.

I like soccer, though I don't watch much of it these days, but I think I'm going to start paying more attention going forward. Honestly, I am getting of how these games are reffed, and how all the fun and excitement is being choked out of the game due to new rules and restrictions.

If Martin is successful it will just be because somebody messed up. These same things have been brought up for military as hazing has been fazed out and the way soldiers are being treated with more respect. Everyone deserves respect even football players and soldiers.
We still have one of the best trained and capable armies in the world even with having to respect and having some bounderies on what can be done to grown men. What makes football or any other sport great has nothing to do with being able to haze or mistreat players.

I dont get how having to watch what you say and do makes you unable to be able to lead men. They already cannot do whatver they want to do.

ahh, Im in the Army and Im in a unit where you need to have some hair on your balls in order to make it. It builds commodery and it builds a strong bond between guys that need to have that cohesion. We are a team, we talk to eachother like this all the time... but I can tell you one thing... while Im not saying people dont deserve respect, because they do of course, in all walks of life... respect is not given, you have to earn it. And the best way to do that is to do your job and do it well... basically handle your business. We cannot stand what they are doing to the Army with these damn guidelines. There are some sections of the Army that just need to be rough neck kick ass units... thats how we stay the best most kick ass army in the world. But i can tell you one thing, we will loses that status if things keep going in the direction they are going. I could get into a whole lot of things on this subject from all the way to the top to down in the sand, but it's basically they same thing in footbal, they are a unit, and they need to be able to trust eachother to be able to do their job... it's obvious Martin couldnt do his job and he couldn't handle it. it's only natural to weed out the weak... we are mammals for Christ sake... I suppose we should take out the male lion just because he is the king of the jungle so other non dominant lions can have a chance at the females...

What concerns me about this investigation is that is the first investigation to be done by an independent source. The NFL needs to protect that logo and will do what it feels necessary to keep corporate America bankrolling it. You guys who keep referring back to the past need to realize that it's never going back to that. The more large corporations invest in it the more in tune with their principles it becomes.

Neanderthal days are over. In 30 years you may not recognize the game the way it is today.

He's "independent" but he was hired by the NFL. He's a lawyer. Hired to investigate. He is there to minimize his client's liability.

The league is already turning on Jon Martin in subtle ways. See this article on NFL.com: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...-martin-voted-incognito-to-leadership-council

NFL and NFLPA will unite to bury Martin.
