With all of the other concerns and happenings it would seem that a future transition on the defense would be something to worry about another day. But since two of our leaders and anchors on the defense are getting older and the prominent, newest member is past 30, age is a concern. With age it seems players become more susceptible to serious and career threatening injuries. With the pounding that defensive linemen and linebackers take the risk is even greater.
When the time comes to pass the torch to the next generation of defenders who will fill the roll Zack Thomas and Jason Taylor have carried for so long? Who will call defensive plays on the field for the defense like Zack does now?
It would seem that Joey Porter could help fill the gap, but at 30+ years of age he is in the later stages of his career and can't be considered a player to build with, only an interim roll player.
Is Channing Crowder the next defensive leader or just another good roll player?
After seeing various threads, and post after post about Thomas and Taylor getting old, and Porter being over 30 I began to wonder. Do we have the foundation to build around or do we need to bring in the players to form the foundation with?

I think that the age of our D is very overrated. Traylor skews the #. JT, Holliday and Zach are getting up there but you need the vet leadership they bring. Our line has gotten a big influx of young talent. Solai, Vickerson, Wright, and Roth can all be potential starters with Solai and Wright potential studs. At LB we have Crowder as the future with a couple of new guys that hopefully we hit on one of them. We have changed out the secondary and IF JAllen can find a comfort zone we have some good youth there. I think this D is going to be scary this year as long as they are not on the field the whole game like the past couple of years.

Consider this...

Roth as a part time DE last year looked just as good (If not better) then starter Kevin Carter,

Solai has been said to be at worst, a monster against the run, and he has a meanstreak we have not seen at DT for a long time

Wright was probably one of the most dominating DTs in 05, and he did it with a so called severe nagging injury that still did not stop him from being the man that put the final nail against the Trojans for the National championship.

Those are three players that could become very good to great talents on this team. It's a shame about Fred Evens because he was another player that could have been amazing on this Defense.

.......Roth......Solai......Wright

Here is a front three that could be awesome if they reach their potential.

We have alot of young talent in both our secondary and our Dline. We could use another really good cornerback though. With regards to linebacker, we should be okay for the next couple of years, but the good news about that position is that it is the easiest to replace...

I believe the core defense has 2-3 seasons left. I hope that the upcoming drafts (plural) continue to develop the Oliine and as well address the core defense.

Kelvin Smith and Abe Wright. Wright is somewhat in the mold of JT. Smith was in the top 5 for 2 years and 2nd last year in the big east in tackles and may be a steal. Smith was a four year starter for Syracuse and if you look at his draft bio he looks good. The same with Wright. He was very productive in the big 12 and may also be a steal. since they aren't needed right away they can learn from the best. Randy and Cam may have already thought of this.

Does your opinion of Tank Johnson change now that he wasn't drunk and just got a speeding ticket? I know he's been ripped by people because of the drunk driving charge that appears shouldn't have been charged.

I still don't think Miami will look his way, and even though he wasn't drunk I still question way he would go behind the wheel after he'd been drinking. I wouldn't necessarily want him because of the murder he was linked to and the stories that came out about his after that and the gun charges. But, for him he might get a pass and make a little more cash from someone know that the drunk driving charge has been dismissed.

If he could be had cheap might be worth a look, but honestly think that even with all his bagage some team will over pay for him so Miami will look another direction. Plus Maimi is just under $6 million with their cap. Be interesting to see if Tank ends up a Patriot.

I would wait until his suspension is over or until the youngsters don't show nothing in camp. I wouldn't mind Tank but he was in Arizona riding around at 3-4 o'clock in the morning. What do you think he will do in South Beach?

We haven't drafted a stud since Johnson ran the draft.
