The Colts scored their only TD of the game on a 4th down run. What have you got in mind? You should ask Unitas how he feels about Shula going for it on 4th down in the Super Bowl instead of kicking the FG. Most likely cost them SB III.

I mean you do that every day of the week. Already have the lead, Field goal forces them to TD just to tie and they have to get a TD regardless. That's not even a comparable example.Shula went for it on 4th down with about a minute left in the 1972 AFC championship, leading 21-17 on the Steelers 8. Didn't make it. Not as bad as McDaniel's decision, but you can certainly question it.
4th and what? Not even on the same level. Shula was winning by 4. The Steelers would have had a TD to win, and a field goal did the Steelers no good. If Shula makes it...it's over. That a big difference when you are TIED and have a chance to go up by 3 with under 1:47 left and the other team is out of time outs!Shula went for it on 4th down with about a minute left in the 1972 AFC championship, leading 21-17 on the Steelers 8. He absolutely was trying to throw the game. Any dimwitted coach still kicks the FG.Going for a 4th and goal, game tied, with 1:44 in the 4th. Dumbest call ever.
They moved the ball 59 yards in 36 seconds. They would’ve had the ball at the 10 with 1:05. Giving up a TD and losing would not have been out of the question had they kicked a FG. I know what he did goes against conventional wisdom but analytics say it was a mathematically smart decision. I get kicking the FG. That’s the safe move but not one that guarantees victory, either. I just think it was a good call. Not like it was a no-brainer either way, but it was far from an idiotic call. Then so what? They tie and they go into overtime. McDaniel got lucky they didn’t lose in regulation with his bonehead timeouts trying to get the ball back in regulation.
When its tied...you take the lead...pure and simple. It was a STUPID gamble especially against a team who had not moved the ball well and with a back up QB WITH NO TIMEOUTS! McGenius thinks he's cute and it almost bit him in the ass! They moved the ball 59 yards in 36 seconds. They would’ve had the ball at the 10 with 1:05. I would venture to guess when you work out the math, many people who think it was a bad call would have actually have assumptions that imply it was a good call and don’t even know it. What I mean is this. If I were to ask you what are the percent chances of the following:WTF, people are still defending the no field goal attempt. What a bunch of retards!
Do you know situational football at all?????????????? Thos of us who do...don't need a damn computerized analytics or odds. It's just plain common football sense!I would venture to guess when you work out the math, many people who think it was a bad call would have actually have assumptions that imply it was a good call and don’t even know it. What I mean is this. If I were to ask you what are the percent chances of the following:
- odds of dolphins converting on 4th and goal
- odds of commanders kicking fg if dolphins are stopped
- odds of commanders scoring a TD if dolphins score
- odds of commanders kicking a fg if dolphins kick a fg and kick off
- odds of dolphins making a short fg
… and then we punched those assumptions into analytics that tell you what the odds of winning are based on going for it vs kicking a FG. I bet the numbers would surprise people. That’s all I’m saying. And to call people “retards” that think otherwise, is quite humorous, because those that think otherwise probably are a bit more mathematically inclined than those who blatantly think it was a bad call.
My point is that your common sense is based upon gut feelings. Look I get where you’re coming from but a coaches job is to maximize the team’s chance of winning. If you don’t truly know how the odds change based upon your own probabilities of each possible outcome then how can you know if common sense is wise or not? The numbers would actually surprise you. Look, I’ve been a football fan for 50 years. I get it. But you have to admit most football coaches and fans are not rocket scientists. So sometimes sound decisions shock the fans. Here’s one such case.Do you know situational football at all?????????????? Thos of us who do...don't need a damn computerized analytics or odds. It's just plain common football sense!
Unitas didn’t play in that game until the outcome was settled as Morrall was the starter all year. Also, I don’t think that’s what cost him the game. The Jets kicked their asses. The former AFL teams were underrated as they would win the next what, 10-12 SBs minus the 2 the Cowboys got in the 70’s ?You should ask Unitas how he feels about Shula going for it on 4th down in the Super Bowl instead of kicking the FG. Most likely cost them SB III.
Exactly. Otherwise why have a play caller? Let the algorithms do it.Do you know situational football at all?????????????? Thos of us who do...don't need a damn computerized analytics or odds. It's just plain common football sense!
