The #1 picks can end up being mediocre just like late round picks can be elite. It sure helps aquire real talent instead of consistent mediocrity.

The Browns and Andrew Luck are perfect arguments against your position.I wish we lost all of our games in 2011 and drafted Andrew Luck. We'd be sitting pretty right now. I'm sure he'll be able to throw a regulation ball very soon.
Just the last couple years, I put that in there for a reason. They have traded down and aquired some good talent that played well the last couple years. I'm sure they can find a way to destroy the QB they draft but that's not what I'm referring to. They have an incredible draft scenrio this year.

The draft picks by themselves mean little. If we drafted Andrew Luck - who would have actually played QB for us the last few years? He has been injured and I am More doubtful about his future than Tannehill's future health wise.
Winners manage with what they have and win when they can.
There last few first round picks are very good players. Sheldon makes a big diff on a dline, Coleman stays healthy he is a playmaker and Garrett is the real deal. They haven’t played well in 10 years. Until they prove they can possibly get to .500 they will remain a garbage franchise.
I know this hard to believe but indi online is garbage compared to ours over the last half decade. Luck would most cerainly be in better health. The Browns and Andrew Luck are perfect arguments against your position.

Very true but the % of who is a starter and continues to be one in round 1 is huge compared to the 2nd round and on. When you take into account who becomes pro bowlers or play at a high level for at least 4 years it is even bigger around 67% most of that in the first half of round 1. So it most certainly helps. Everyone wants value or a stud in later rounds it's what really helps you succeed but most Super Stars are drafted early. The #1 picks can end up being mediocre just like late round picks can be elite.

Ya he's on the Patriots because they know how good he is. Graded our very well the last 2 years and makes a difference in how teams approach the D. A top pick in round 1by cleveland being successful. Not mediocrity.Danny Shelton is no longer with the Browns.

And even worse it was to the pats....uhh.I agree with your assessment of Shelton. I do NOT agree with the trade Cleveland made. Shelton AND a 2018 5th for a 2019 third? I know they have another player like him at DT, but geez, man. That doesn't give me a lot of confidence in their FO.
I'm not sure I would agree with a lot of you. Would it absolutely suck to not win a game all season, to have only won like 3 in 3 years and to have gone through the number of QBS they have? Absolutely, but they can't get worse. Where have we gotten with the mediocre seasons we have had. How much does it suck to make the playoffs and get embarrassed and pick midway through the draft? I hated the season when went 1-15, but I knew it had to get better. I have some friends who are Browns fans, and although they don't get overly excited for the season, they know that it will get better. If you ask NFL fans what team is the laughing stock of the NFL, a lot of them will say the Dolphins, not the Browns. Other than having a decent coach, I think Cleveland will finish better than us this year.
Look at it this way: From 2012-2017, the Browns had ELEVEN first-round picks.
There are four of those picks still on the Browns roster, and none from earlier than 2016.
That is an astounding level of incompetence.
