"Possesses a strong looking frame for his size and is a compactly built receiver. Showcases good body control and hand eye coordination when asked to extend and pluck the football and isn't afraid to work the middle of the field. Isn't a real explosive kid however. Lacks a great first step to eat up the cushion and isn't a guy who is going to run by anyone at the next level. Looks like a high 4.5/low 4.6 guy on tape and doesn't have any real change of gear to his game.

Snaps his head around quickly out of his breaks, puts his body between the ball and defender and will snatch. However, doesn't do a great job generating much separation. He is still developing as a route runner as well, as he too often just rolls into and out of his breaks and there is no real snap/burst on sharply breaking routes. Plus, he isn't overly big or physical to easily box out bigger defenders away from the play.

However, he's a strong kid who will get after it in the run game, gain leverage and stick through contact. Is limited as an athlete with the ball in his hands. Looks very average trying to run to daylight, doesn't have that second gear and looks tighter in the hips when trying to breakdown and change directions. Too often looks like he's on skates trying to get out of his breaks both as a route runner and with the ball in his hands and doesn't have any real sudden/explosive change of direction skills to his game.

Impression: A strong kid who can pluck, work toward the football and pluck off his frame. However, is going to have a tough time consistently separating vs. man at the next level."

Listen...I think he could be the true steal of the draft..I remember Nevada was playing boise and he made play after play. I was asking myself who is this guy? I could see him really shining in OTAs and training camp

Yeah, I remember last year watching Colin Kapernick's highlights and also wondering who that Matthews kid was. Would've never thought he would drop to the 7th round.

Wonder why that was, clearly he made Colin better.

Watching these highlights definitely makes me drool to see him make plays like this for us. It'll be interesting to see how these skills work against NFL caliber secondaries. Playmakers are playmakers though. He might not get as open or get as deep but if he's got a nose for the ball then he's got a shot. Bess is the perfect example of a guy who's made plays his whole life and won't quit just because some scouts didn't care for his metrics. This Matthews kid definitely looks like a guy who plays WR like fish swim.

Kid knows how to get open, very smooth in and out of cuts. Absolute stealing for getting him in the 7th!

Looks like he gets open well on the outside and has soft hands... If we could find a way to add some speed to him, I'd be hopeful

What a steal for 7th round pick.

He's very impressive with YAC (yards after catch) ,can get open ,impressive late round pick.

Im for anyone that doesn't drop catchable balls we need that first and foremost.

he looks ok but remeber its a Highlite video so take it for what it is.... i really like the cunningham kid alittle better

Before this draft, a statement had been made that Philbin made a comment stating that Matthews somewhat reminded him of a James Jones type that is in Green Bay right now. If this is the case, and he can make the team, he would have some value at some point.

Wolfpack alumni...Matthews was fun to watch! WAC has always been a pass happy offensive show. A few past WRs from Nevada have made it to the NFL. Nate Burleson probably stands out for having the most success in the NFL.
