Matt Moore: Moore, the Miami Dolphins’ backup quarterback, didn’t want to see Ryan Tannehill go down with a reported season-ending ACL injury.“My heart breaks, man,” Moore said, according to the Miami Herald. “That guys puts his heart and soul in this.”
But it had to feel pretty nice to help lead the Dolphins to a huge win in Tannehill’s place on Sunday.
Moore had 30 passes since the start of the 2012 season, and just 11 over the past four seasons before Sunday. He hadn’t thrown a pass this season. Moore once looked like an intriguing quarterback for the Dolphins, with 2,497 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2011 (12 starts), but settled into life as a longtime backup.
After Tannehill went out with a knee injury, Moore played the fourth quarter. He made two huge plays after the Arizona Cardinals tied the game 23-23, hitting Kenny Stills for 12 yards and then lofting one up for Stills to gain 29 yards and set up a game-winning field goal as time expired.
It has been a long time since Moore was relevant. Now he’s leading an 8-5 Dolphins team that still has wild-card hopes.

Hate to say it, but that 29 yarder to Stills looked like a desperation back-foot type of pass that we got lucky on. I will be rooting for Moore to have success, and I think if anyone can get him prepared it's Gase, but I have my reservations when it comes to anointing him as the guy that will take us into the playoffs. I hope I'm wrong.

It was a very risky "screw it" type of throw, yes.

But I maintain that that's why Moore is a good backup. You want your backup to do that instead of being scared to take chances to win a football game.

Yes it was a desperation throw and like Wanny, have no issue with it in that spot.

I'm glad it worked out, but it was almost the worst possible time to attempt that pass.

1st and 10
Already at the edge of FG range (47 yarder)
43 seconds left

I hope he makes better decisions over the next three games.

Stills made a great adjustment on the ball. Tannehill probably eats that, although that might be the right play in that situation.

Moore gave his guy a chance, my thoughts are you'll probably see more turnovers with Matt, but less checkdowns.

Franks' long this year is 41, Gase has shown a lack of confidence in him and he's kicking in a driving rainstorm as well. Even the 21 yard chip shot in those conditions with that kicker was no gimme.

I think if Tannehill was in, it's more likely it was a better throw. He's shown that he's willing to eat a hit in the face and throw it up to Stills -- we've seen plenty of that this season -- but he has the arm talent to deliver a better throw in that situation. Moore made the right decision to throw it to Stills there, he got open and he's good at adjusting to the ball downfield. The reason it was dangerous was that Moore simply couldn't get enough mustard on the football.

Ryan Tannehill's arm is very underappreciated. As sad as it is, it's probably going to take this injury to make people realize what we have here.

Moore and Stills made a great play. You cant count on your kicker making a 40 yarder let alone a 47 yarder in the rain.

ill be the first to say it... it definitely made me appreciate what we had. Im hoping tanne comes back even stronger next year. I want him back already

It was desperation throw and ugly looking but he threw it in torrential rain so that affected the ball obviously.

Man, I'm trying to have faith. While I agree with your sentiment about Moore, the problem is he's no longer a backup. This is his ride the rest of the way. Can he lead the O well enough to get us to the playoffs? I think so. I hope so.

He saw one on one coverage and went for it - with pressure in his face - in my mind, that's exactly what he should be doing. Half the forum sees that route if that ball is not thrown and complains "one on one! stop the checkdowns!!!"

I don't think it was desperation. Watch the replay. Stills was one on one and had a step. Moore threw it for the corner endzone but Moore was blasted on his step through and the ball was short changed as a result. Stills made an excellent adjustment.

If it were Moore and Tony Sporano back there I'd be doubtful. But it's Moore and Gase. They'll be ready.
