The Dolphins recently have exchanged contract extension proposals with strong safety Yeremiah Bell, with the idea of locking up that starter beyond 2008. Bell is currently playing out a one-year deal he signed after last season.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus is traveling and could not be reached for comment and his brother Jason Rosenhaus declined to comment. But a source close to Bell says there have been on-going discussions between the player's camp and the Dolphins.

No deal is imminent. But both sides are eager for the regular-season to begin and offer a gauge of what Bell can deliver. Bell missed all of last season when he ruptured an Achilles tendon in the season-opener.

After Bell, lets lock up Carey and Crowder.

That's risky when you consider his injury history. But, if the Colts can lock up Bob Sanders with no fear in their eyes, why not.

Crowder I'd probably prefer to wait on until he actually does something that proves he's good for us.

Carey, I still think they're going to wait until they know more about what is going to happen with Jordan Gross out of Carolina.

I think it will be an incentive kind of contract given his injury history. But i am all for it this guy is a playmaker he is a ball hawk and gives our secondary a much needed boost. We all know that BP and JI like to work from the inside out and dont like to draft secondary players so lock up Bell see if Allen comes around and sign Nnamdi Asomugha next year and you will have a stud secondary and you can use the draft to continue to build the front seven and get the O some weapons.

Completely agree with EVERYTHING you just said. and by the way, wonderful analysis of the upcoming game CK. I've been on this site for years and I post occasionally but I always enjoy reading your posts. :hi5:

You're welcome my man. My pleasure.

Definitely a BIG year for Channing . . . this will be the year if he takes the next step or not. So far he looks like he is ready, but we will see when it matters most (on Sundays).

He has proved alot of people wrong so far this offseason and I hope he continues to become the defensive leader on this team.

Yea a big money extension to Bell with a good amount of guaranteed money isn't the best thing. He already is like 30 and he is as injury prone as they come. Probably wont be more than a 2 or 3 year deal, I want to keep him, and when healthy he potentially could be one of the top safeties out there . . . but we got to be smart.

I'm not so sure we resign Carey either, I guess we will see, but he will command big dollars I would imagine. With the lack of depth at tackle on this team right now, it seems like a no brainer, but I dunno. I would love to keep him because of his versatility and the fact that he has been so solid the last 2 years and change.

Obviously the front office is making headway on spending that money so we're within the limit of capspace we have to use up.

I can seriously see them holding off on Crowder and Carey, at least until late in the season. Certainly an incentive for both players.

I'm not sure about locking anyone up besides Carey at this point. Bill is the greatest franchise builder in NFL history though and I won't question him. We have plenty of money though but we also have 3 picks in the first 2 rounds again next year so I would see how at least part of the season plays out. Of course Bill don't mind sitting picks for a year or two behind a vet that can hold the position down until someone with more talent is ready.

Doesn't it seem wierd that Wanny was responsible for Bell, Ricky Williams and Vernon Carey. Arguably our best players

I think it is also wierd that everyone seems better this year. Allen and Porter was our best players at the end of last year IMO but I clearly see a differance already. Remeber we had the #4 overall D 2 years ago and the first thing CAm done was question Zachs heart at the first team meeting and rag the D all year. I expect to see everyone playing at a higher level for a FO and coaches that know how to handle NFL players and use their individual talents as strengths.

The Dolphins have huge leverage in this situation, not only because he is injury prone but he is also a niche player, being that he is only a good player close to the line. Get him one on one or get him deep and he has no impact on the game. I see this move as a hedge our bets type of deal. They'll go into next year knowing they have a decent player locked up, yet still trying to improve the spot, he is no long term solution.

i think this is a mistake. 30 plus year old safety coming off an achilles. not to mention drew rosehaus squeezing us for every penny.

bell should play b4 we pay especially with this being such a deep safety class in the draft.

carey should already be locked up long term but waiting for gross also makes sense.

crowder is full show me mode.

Bell is arguably one of our best players?

Wanny was also responsible for Running Ricky into the ground.

Carey was a Speilman pick.

Wanny was also responsible for drafting Eddie Moore and not Boldin

Wanny lost to Bowling Green this weekend.

Wanny is an ashhole!

Great post and very good facts. I wasn't going to get into all the Wanny hating but with posts like that sums it all up for us.

Point of order. Can the Dolphins really extend his contract? I know there is some rule in place that prevents a player's contract from being changed twice within one year's time...so can a team sign a guy to a one-year contract in March and then extend the contract in September? There's probably some kind of loophole that allows it, but I'd love to know what the nature of the exception is.
