my expectations are always high for bell, because i've seen what he can do. every year i feel like it's one year closer to him fading off into obscurity. his break out year needs to be soon or the only people that know the name 'yeremiah bell' in ten years will be a handful of serious dolphin fans. in our upcoming 3-4 defense, bell will be able to showcase his physical ability. i was pumped when we resigned him and can't wait to see him bounce back from that injury (i hope).

being a bigger fan of defense, i recognized his talent a few years back. when he took over for tillman, our entire defense got immediately better. tillman was just awful. couldn't defend the pass or run, was constantly out of position, and missed tackles all over the field. he was awful, plain and simple. this question has been bugging me for the past couple of years and noone has really been able to answer it.

how did tillman get the starting spot over bell a few years back?

God knows how Tillman had the starting spot but Bell getting on the field was a blessing. He is a hard-hitter and, IMO, can be a leader of this defense. Hope to see him knocking some fools into place next year!

I think he got the respect because he was like a 2nd round pick by the Bills if I remember correctly......He was older and I think the coaching staff was still trying to see if he'd ever figure out the pro game. Bell was our 6th round pick, and I truely believe that was the difference.

I think bell can really contribute if he gets some help. I think he's a big time hitter and makes solid tackles. Maybe it's just me but he gets in trouble sometimes by being just a little bit out of position and can't catch up. I'd rather see him be above the play when he misses then below it......I think a little help and he'll figure things out.

tillman as a second round pick makes the most sense out of everything else i've heard since i have been asking this over the last few years.

it blows my mind how we missed on that one. how do you not differentiate a poor football player from a very good one?

I think it's the politics of football.......but in this case he jumped around before finally landing in Miami. You really would think they would have had a better picture of what was reality.

Bell was coming off a broken leg after spending the previous year and a half coming back from tearing up his knee. I think there were and still are questions about his ability to make it through a season.

Perhaps Bell didn't stand out in practice like he did during games? I honestly have no idea and I've always wondered this. There definitely was a noticeable positive change when Bell replaced Tillman in the lineup.

If Bell gets hurt again his career his over. If he doesn't, he just might play 5 more years. If he put the work in to rehab, its all he can do so lets hope for continued health because we need all the secondary help we can muster. Atleast in one regard getting hurt in the first game of the season is a positive because it gives you even ample recovery time. Thats 10 and a half months before training camp so he should be close to 100% by week 1.

Bell unfortunately for him and us has been injury prone. THe guy is a player no doubt but his clock is running out - isn't he like 29 or 30? IF he could stay healthy he would easily be in the top 1/4 of safetys in the league. I agree with Ghost, one more and he is done.

Speaking of what happened to kind of things, Darrius last year was looking pretty good even fighting that pulled groin (I think). Not bad in pass coverage and his run play was solid. His last game for us he had 9 tackles. I know he was a good player for Jax but then he got injured 2 years in a row and was released. Why did we let him go last year especially with our safetys as thin as they were? Was it just the injury thing again, because he seemed to be playing through it.

darrius just wasn't the player he used to be, and he wasn't gonna come close to returning to form. his body is done. loved to watch him play though.

totally agree that this is bell's last year to show what he can do. at 30, he needs to have a breakout season and stay healthy or he might linger in obscurity.

thanks for the responses. very good input. had always wondered how tillman got that starting nod.

Tillman was my least favorite Dolphin of the Saban and Cameron regimes.

He was awful.
