I just had a question about Dolphins fans' opinion of Parcells. Let me explain a little.

I've disliked Parcells my whole football watching life. So when he came to Miami I had to put all that aside. Overall, I like the direction the Dolphins are in even though I've hated some of his moves.

Then there are Dolphin fans that think everything he does is genius and that he can do no wrong. I'm not judging, I'm just saying.

So for the people like me, how good does Parcells have to do here in Miami for him to 'win' your love?

And the people not like me, how bad does Parcells have to do for him to 'lose' your love?

I see great things in our near future, so in no way am I trying to be a Negative Nancy. I just talk about it alot with my friends and wanted to get your take on it.

I am like you, and maybe worse. I really disliked Bill, but unlike alot of other's you and I don't hide it. So many just fell in love with him and changed their opinoins instantly. I do like Tony Sparano so far, so that has me encouraged as Bill is OLD. He will only be here so long, and I doubt he'd be around for a superbowl. Personally, I don't think he's gotten better with age so I am hoping Jeff Ireland is a bright guy.

Exactly, love ain't got nothing to do with it. ;)

He has a team building & coaching style and it is a proven, winning style. Parcells lives and breathes football. There is a lot you can learn by paying attention to what he has done & said over the years. Plus, he's funny as hell.

Well, i've always like Bill as a coach, and i do believe that he knows the game and what he's doing. I think he is/was the right man for the job. But i'm with you on the side of Dolphin fans who don't worship the ground he walks, don't think he's a genius who can do no wrong. I agree that he has already made some wrong moves. But that's just my opinion. He's the guy who knows the game a hell of a lot more than i do, he gets paid to make decisions so i'm sure he truly believes the moves he has made will benefit the organization.

What does he have to do to win my love? Well chocolates are always nice....

But seriously Bill Parcells has a great track record over a long period of time in the NFL. However he hasn't done a thing in Miami yet. I assume he'll greatly help this organization and my expectations are that in three years time or sooner, whether Bill is here or not (maybe he rebuilds the team and retires) this team will be back in the playoffs. So that's what i want him to do. Make the decisions that will get the Dolphins to maybe 5-6-7 wins this year, 8-9 just outside the playoffs next year and hopefully a playoff birth the year after. a Three year window. His track record says he can do it.

But in the NBA Larry Brown's track record spoke for itself when he went to the Knicks. Bob Knights at Texas Tech. So we'll see.....

I viewed the move with cautious optimism... Blind faith is exactly that... BLIND. I have always viewed Parcells with a measure of respect for what he has managed to accomplish... Respect not awe.

The truth is the man speaks about character as the single intangible that can differentiate good and great... Yet he has made questionable character moves throughout his career... Abandoning franchises (yes they were always in better shape) Embarrassing ownership and star players (a quality that he detests in a player by the way) and in general letting his ego run roughshod while at the same time preaching 'team' first...

Having said it, he has the trump card by which all men are judged upon, inside football and out... RESULTS. Some people respect that above any other in a 'anything goes' as long as we win mentality... Personally I believe that is short term thinking and I want this team to be great for a LONG time... I want to be a perrennial powerhouse...

I believe the way to treat Parcells is to respect his accomplishments but also concede the man's weaknesses... Remember that his ego is boundless and his history is leaving before the job is done... But his accomplishments do speak loudly... Is he the right man at the right time for this franchise? I say yes... but the burden of proof is on him not us... We are the dolphins faithful, he has to prove to US he belongs at the wheel of our beloved aqua and orange mean machine...

but if he "abandons" Miami, Huizenga and Ross have allowed him to hire guys that will stay behind and try to continue his legacy. thats a big difference here. the coaches and GM will still be here when he leaves

I have no doubt that by 2010, you'll be seeing the 2008 Cowboys with the depth and playmakers

You see that's the thing I like about Parcells. He wants to win that trophy for HIM, not for anyone else. He wants to get into the 'tournament' as he refers to the play-offs, because he's a football junkie, not because he wants people to 'like' him. The bottom line is the bottom line, 'it is what it is'. Damn how many times do you hear that token Parcells phrase every week?

True... And if we are looking past BP... Then the question becomes are they the right men at the right time? It is almost a 'philisophical' discussion ad infinitum...

I think you are correct.. History is full of great leaders who were egomaniacs... Maybe you could even argue it is actually a requisite... I do believe he is the right man at the right time and he does have the ego and strength of character to stick to his plan against all odds... But I take the same attitude he does towards his players... You want my respect? SHOW ME WHAT YOU CAN DO... DON'T TELL ME WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.

Kids wear Superman pajamas, Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas, Chuck Norris wears Bill Parcells pajamas.
