Dolphins trade for Saints LB Stephone Anthony

Hurts the draft? Really? For a 5th round pick? Besides, the Dolphins do a better job drafting AFTER the draft. We are the best in the business in terms of drafting "undrafted free agents"
I don't know if to laugh or cry

Some analysis from ESPN:

"..He was clearly at his best when playing middle linebacker, his college position. He started all 16 games there as a rookie in 2015 and led the Saints with 112 tackles.

But that was also the year the Saints' defense set NFL records for most touchdown passes allowed in a season and highest opponent passer rating. Anthony had a lot to do with that as the “quarterback” of the defense, who called signals and wore the communication device to relay plays from the sideline.

The Saints tried moving him to strongside linebacker last season so he didn’t have to do as much thinking, but it didn’t take. Neither did his temporary move to weakside linebacker this summer.."

So with that knowledge, there is some hope that if you make him a two-down MLB, you'll get the sideline-to-sideline tackling and pass-defending ability he has by virtue of his speed, without his being a liability on passing downs.

That may be quite the improvement over Mike Hull, who was exposed on Sunday in that regard. There was a screen pass to Melvin Gordon (or it may have been a different Chargers RB) on Sunday in which Mike Hull was very slow getting to the flat to defend it, and you can trust that future teams will be watching that film and gameplanning against the Dolphins accordingly. Such passes on first and second down would continue to exploit Hull at MLB, and with Timmons out and Hull's continuing to play on passing downs, those passes would continue to exploit him on passing downs, as well.

In fact, in that sense this trade may have had more to do with Hull than with Timmons. We don't know for sure at this point, of course, but it's a possibility in my opinion.

In all honesty I would have rather just signed Neville Hewitt off the street than give up a 5th for a guy that seems like a total bust.

Hewitt doesn't have this guy's track record of performance at MLB in the NFL, however, and 5th-round picks have less than a 10% chance of becoming long-term starters in the league, let alone starters of average or greater value.

The more I look the more I think we should play him as a base mike

The one splash play hull gave us in the run game he can give us and he's a much better athlete and has much better range. Much stouter at the poa.

This may well be more about hull and mauluga and not timmons.

Give him some base middle field under Zone and flats back out of the backfield cover responsibilities.

Avoid the flex man cover

From all I've read, it seems that Stephone Anthony is a physical freak, who is best at MLB, but is weak at quarterbacking the defense.

So maybe keep Stephone Anthony at MLB, and have Kiko QB the defense.

This might be a dumb question, but do any teams ever use another Defensive player, other than the MLB, to wear the communication device and call signals? Obviously, the MLB is in the best position to scan the field and call out signals, but was wondering if any team has used another position for that.

That's my read. Besides I was thinking would you rather Hull or Allen on the field. I think Allen is the answer, much faster and quicker of an athlete. Hull has more instincts while Allen is bigger and faster. It's a trade off

Rashad Jones will make the coverage calls/adjustments for the back 7, but as far as being the defender to relay the coaches' playcalls via the speaker in the helmet, it's usually the MLB. I'm currently unaware of any team that might do it differently.

let's assume he's our 2 down mike because i think that makes the most sense based on what the reports and smarter football minds are saying on this forum....

is he as an athlete any help to us in the nickel if we put him outside? because right now it seems we are lacking dearly in the athlete/range/coverage department at LB in passing situations

Can Melaluga play strong on early downs with Anthony at MLB if we do part ways with Timmons?

It's funny you say that cause I would love to be able to put a gadget in his helmet directly connecting to his lb coach who by offensive personnel goes over what his assignments could be in cover and vs the run on base downs literally til the 15 second clock expires. Last thing you'd say to him every time being don't blow it.

Good trade, stick him at MLB and move kiko outside. He's raw but very fast running a 4.5 forty and very athletic. You can't teach speed and athleticism, everything else will come with good coaching. Better than anything you'll get in the 5th. He was very good at Clemson

His range belongs in the middle of the field. When he fires his gun he arrives like a top shelf burst athlete. It's just a matter of how long it takes him to fire the gun. And frankly folks that part of things is very highly likely not correctable.

The read and diag is a whiff. It's why despite the athlete he's gonna be late to the perimeter of the field sometimes.

Complex run games that work their passing gamers off it are gonna be a problem cause they require him to adjust on the fly like buffalo for example.

We'd waste the range at strong frankly in our scheme but we'd hide the adjust on fly and instincts exposure.
