Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard growing along with the defense

I still feel okay about X. Keeping Julio in check was a win. I don't think a young corner is really going to do that much better against the Joneses/Greens/Bryants of the world. Just have to keep them from completely going off and X did that.

He might never emerge as a true shutdown, but I think he will develop into a solid corner for us.

well it was a zone with man over top scheme, it was Jones responsibility to cover remember X is a corner not a safety.

honestly, only he really knows why he's banned, but I will say repeat behavior didn't help.

I'm sure we're not supposed to discuss punishments, but I'll simply say that I would like to see Sons' privilege to post restored at some point. While I sometime disagreed with him, he was a thought provoking poster that made FH a more interesting place. Hopefully that is appropriate.

respectful questions are always appreciated. It's a long standing rule that we don't discuss punitive measures of the membership outside of the staff forum. I will say it's a testament to how much we try to keep the forum clean that most members have no idea why "x" member is no longer welcomed. Generally rules have to be broken numerous times for a member to be perma banned, In other words the bad has to outweigh the good and they have to be incapable of following our rules. If a member is permabanned, that is generally the main reason why.

Fair enough

Curious on the long TD X gave up to the practice squad WR - was that a miscommunication/misunderstanding, or did the kid just blow his wheels off? The way they showed the replay, Howard was already way behind him when he came into the picture. Ultimately it was his fault, but I wonder if it wasn't due to coverage confusion, given he was on Jones nearly the entire game.

Where did you get this stat

In 5 games played, Howard only has 2 passes that he was able to defend or break.
One was against the Jets and one against the Titans without Mariota. How many targets so far? Between 6 and 8 per game. Thats about almost 40 targets in 5 games. He only managed to break 2 passes thrown his way...
You be the judge!!!

I think the PFF ranking is a bit harsh but X does have some things he needs to work on... mostly getting his head around.

Other than that im happy with where he is. Ive seen A LOT of CB struggles in recent years and he isnt near that level

I can't remember the % of receptions he has allowed but it is high. Of course the more important one is TD's allowed and he's done much better there. He has talent but also a long way to go. At this point Tank seems like the more dynamic corner of the two but that's just my opinion. Not easy to have two great corners. Last time for us was Surtain and Madison

Ozzy rules!!

Our two losses are not because of X being "111th" or Mike Hull, or Allen, or Kiko, or anyone on defense. Our two losses are due to our inept offense....not being able to score more than 20 points, period.

You can call it Cutler.
You can call it the o-line.
You can call it drops by Juice, DVP, Gray, & Stills.
You can call it the slowness and lack of aggression by Julius Thomas...

...but those two losses are on the offense.

X has played decently IMO. Much better than the Boise kid we picked a couple years ago, much better than the other twig of a corner we drafted a couple years ago, better than Maxwell, etc.

I think we are solid at both CB spots right now.

If you're talking about Lippett...I don't agree. Lippett led the team in INTs, made a lot of pass breakups. He definitely had a knack for getting to the ball. I think Xavien probably has more upside physically but that's been the story of many failed NFL players. Physically gifted but lacking in the mental department. He only played 5 games last year (Howard) so essentially he's still a rookie but I haven't seen him break on a ball this year, that I can remember.

I also hope Sons of Shula returns. Many times I have disagreed with his opinion, but he always gave his honest analysis and contributed a lot of positive things to our community. He is a passionate fan, so I hope he can learn his lesson on how to engage that emotion, reform his actions, and return.

As for Xavien Howard, he is a young CB. To develop young CB's you need to give them playing time and live with their growing pains. We will have similar gaffes from Tankersley before the season ends. Howard missed almost all of his first preseason to injury and 10 games as well. Howard isn't that much ahead of Tankersley on experience, and remember, Howard came out very young.

The future looks bright for our young CB's, but we need to live through their development. He had many good plays against Atlanta, because they had a lot more plays designed for Julio than they threw, and that was a significant part of why Atlanta scored nothing in the second half.

I hope Howard, Tankersley and Sons of Shula learn their lessons and provide us much joy in the future.
