I think there are two different PUP status lists though, one for the period before the start of the season and one for the start of the season. We'll see.

Florida Today reported that Boston told his family he hopes to play in 2004 despite having suffered a torn left patellar tendon. But an NFL source said Boston would definitely be placed on injured reserve because the Dolphins were advised he would need four months to recover from surgery performed last Monday by Dr. John Uribe.

David must not agree with Dr Uribe's prognosis. Maybe my wanting to see him pull it off clouds my reasoning, but if Uribe is giving the average recovery time for the average person or even average athlete, we know that David is anything but average.
They really don't have to make a move with him until the final cutdown if they do put him on IR, so his progress at that point may play a part in the decision.
