Didn't he have to? Numbers in the 40's are limited to FBs, HBs and S, I thought...

As already mentioned, strictly a rulebook thing. Linebackers can't wear numbers in the 40's.

I think LBs can wear numbers in the 40s. It's only the 20s and 30s that are strictly limited to RBs and DBs. I'm not 100% on this, though.
