I think our rivals to the north are getting nervous.:chuckle:
offseason acquisitions in the AFC East, reeling in wide receiver Brandon Marshall to boost the team's passing game that had been a work in progress. Miami has some question marks in other areas, but overall, how will the Dolphins match up against the Patriots next season? First off, Marshall bullied the Patriots last season in Denver, catching eight passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns. He was more physical than anyone in the New England secondary, and he'll give the Pats hell twice in 2010. Marshall will also spread the field for quarterback Chad Henne, who has a big arm and played well after taking over as the starter last season.

Miami's passing attack will rely heavily on Marshall, whether he's catching passes or drawing heavy coverages, and slot receiver Davone Bess might be the biggest beneficiary of defenses with wandering eyes. The Dolphins got disappointing production out of tight end Anthony Fasano in 2009, so the pressure will be on him to step up his game next season.

Famously, the Dolphins' offense has built its reputation out of the backfield since the inception of the Wildcat in 2008. When healthy, running backs Ronnie Brown (coming off a season-ending foot injury) and Ricky Williams have been the best one-two punch for two seasons, and their continued success will be crucial for the growing Henne.

After Brown's injury last season, the Dolphins veered away from the Wildcat, but the traditional running attack actually helped Williams. With the addition of Marshall and Henne's downfield ability -- he can open up the field much more than Chad Pennington, who was the starting quarterback when the 'Phins most heavily relied on the Wildcat -- it's possible that the Wildcat could be on the endangered list.

The Patriots would actually be sad to see the Wildcat die. New England was embarrassed by the tricky offense in 2008, but the Pats' defense smothered it each time thereafter, to the point where Miami offensive coordinator Dan Henning had to basically wave the white flag.

The Patriots' biggest challenge on defense will be creating a pass rush to disrupt Henne, who looked like a Hall of Famer in the Dolphins' Week 13 victory over New England last season. Henne's jersey remained clean, and he completed 29-of-52 passes for 335 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. It wasn’t the fault of the New England secondary nearly as much as it was the defense's complete ineptitude on the pass rush. If the Patriots can change that -- obviously, that’s one of the Patriots' biggest overall concerns in 2010 anyway -- they'll actually have a chance to limit the Dolphins' two-fronted offense.

On the other side of the ball, Miami's changed the direction of its defense by adding inside linebacker Karlos Dansby and subtracting outside linebackers Jason Taylor and Joey Porter, each of whom was largely ineffective in 2009. The Dolphins are pleased with young cornerbacks Sean Smith and Vontae Davis, but they've got a canyon-sized hole at free safety after Gibril Wilson departed and they missed out on Antrel Rolle.

And, despite the struggles of Taylor and Porter, Miami is entrusting its outside linebacker positions to rookie Koa Misi, Cameron Wake and Charlie Anderson. So, yeah, there's that. The addition of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan will greatly help this defense, but the Dolphins will be starting a lot of unproven talent, which will give the advantage to the Patriots' offense.

The Dolphins, who won the AFC East title in 2008, will be in contention to win it again in 2010. But after winning seven games last season, they'll be asking a lot out of Marshall, Henne, Dansby and the coaching staff to provide enough of a turnaround. There's no question that the Dolphins will be well-coached -- Tony Sparano and his staff are one of the best groups in the NFL -- but they'll have to avoid last season's inconsistencies to give the Patriots a bigger scare in 2010.

Joey Porter? Can't get much worse than JP in terms of production when the Phins played up in Foxboro last season.
And as good as JT was last year, both he and JP were inconsistent. They had some good games, but then would have streaks of 2-3 games when they were non-factors.
I really can't see Misi, Wake being worse. In fact, at this stage, Wake is a better pass rusher than JT.

At this stage Wake is easily a better pass rusher than JT.

What's the source of that article??? Looks like another subjective Bleacher Report.

Article has some good points ... HOWEVER, I'll guarantee the Patsies & Bellicheat have ZERO fear of the Dolphins & figure they can beat them.

I think the Patsies will respect the Dolphins & Jets as they are no pushovers, but they'll be favored, have to play hard, & will expect to win.

To beat the Patsies & the Jets ... we'll need a good game plan, crisp execution, not help them, & fight like a cornered dog!! We've done it before & we can do it again!! R-E-S-P-E-C-T

No Problem!!

I guess everyone forgets how JT and Joey Porter totally would disappear in games down the stretch!! With new defensive coordinator coach Nolan will come up ways to muster a better and more potent pass rush!! They got rid of the weak links in the defense.....#1 Weren't you guys sick of Akin Ayodele diving at runners ankles on a regular basis?? Do I even have to say anything about GERBIL WILSON??? Just because Miami isn't New York... Miami made more quality acquisitions than anyone in the AFC East!! Henne is better than Sanchez!! A player that no one is really talking about here is our 1st round pick in Jared Odrick. He is a quality player that will come right in and contribute right away! Let's get psyched for this team and the amount of talent we have finally accrued, after past regimes let it diminish! it's time to stand up and be proud to be a DOLFAN again....like so many times before we will be the team to beat in the AFC East!! Let us sit back and enjoy the next decade of excellence, and our proud tradition!! It's great to be a DOLFAN!!!! GO PHINS!!!

i agree with the article, i think our O line will be better built for the long stretch of the season though, our run blocking is going to be a lot better, and i think our pass protection will be too, and we should have the depth to sustain it all season. i have no doubts that ronnie and ricky will do their thing for another year. which is fine with me, being a run first team. If we do what we did last year in the passing game, ill be content with that, but seeing as we have marshall over ginn now, and more chemistry with the receivers, there is bound to be improvement, especially on henne's part.

the defense on the other hand scares me. yea we got a ton of big SOB's in the trenches, and we should win at the line, but our linebackers are just too iffy. koa misi i just dont expect to contribute much this year, and the same for odrick, i dont think hes beating out merling just yet. however, i disagree with the hate on Anderson and Moses, i think these guys play with a chip on their shoulders and i like um. clemons can't be worse then wilson was for us last year, and if it comes down to it, culver aint the worst depth out there at the position. hopefully jones can play the same kind of roll clemons did last year, or maybe we can use him in the box the way we did with Bell in the nickel last year. oh and tim dobbins over crowder all day erryday

We always play the Pats tough. There is some statistic out there and I think the Dolphins are the team who consistently beat the Pats. We usually split anyway.

I've spent some time on the New England message boards this offseason. And they are a lot more worried about Miami than they're worried about the Jets for the division.

Food for thought.

Good article... It says it about right as far as potential... If our unproven players pan out then we will be vieing for not only the AFC championship but also a good run into the playoffs...
