Chris Long and Vernon Gholston compared to the rest of the DL/LB class

Chris Long was playing DE in a 3-4 defense, where he was being double teamed on virtually every play, and often triple teamed. Gholston had a much better supporting cast on defense and Long still outperformed him.

Secondly, the shuttle indicates "sideline to sideline" speed while the 40 is just long speed. How many times have you ever seen a DL/LB need to run 40 or more yards? The vast majority of the time, that DL/LB is covering a range of no greater than 20 yards. Hell, even if you are a big fan of the 40, Gholston was .08 of a second faster than Long despite being 6 pounds lighter than Long.

Shuttle times from yesterday:
Stanford Keglar: 3.98 (239 pounds)

Long has a very good wingspan, great athleticism for his size and is a great technician. What's not to like?

Just for the record, Gholston played the "Leo" or drop end position. The means he also dropped into coverage and did not simply rush the passer all the time.

Did Gholston even have any deflected passes or interceptions? Depending on how much he dropped back into coverage, that would be a bit of a red flag to me.

He had no passes defended or interceptions. However, he only gave up one first down via pass in his territory. Four first downs in his territory total.
