could it be this?:
theres only so many needs you can address.
better safeties dont necessarily (so much) improve your corner play, or linebacker play, or DL play.
but every one of those positions when upgraded DEFINITELY help out your safeties.
it may be the thinking was we have serviceable safeties, and safeties are less prone to injury, so rather than focus on upgrade and depth there, upgrade the other pieces around them and create a rising tide lifting all boats (safeties) without spending precious draft picks.

don't hate, but is there anyway McCain play Safety? With Howard, Tankersley, Lippett, Maxwell at CB...do we need McCain in the nickel?
He can't really play neither. The 4 corners you mention are all outside corners and not a good fit to play the slot so we're stuck unless some UDFA sticks. BTW, we were not looking for safetieS......we were looking for a FS as we're set at SS with Jones.
