Does anyone know what the thought process as to why we didn’t franchise Wilkins or hunt and then trade them? I’ll hang up and listen

Because tag and trade requires a partner who will give up draft picks to get the player and hardly ever ever ever works.
We didn't have the money to franchise them. Then you have to hope for a trade partner.

To put a speculative tag on either Wilkins or Hunt would have required pushing even more dead cap into 2025 and beyond. Now we can clear what we need in real time and potentially position ourselves to add a big fish or two next offseason.

The first major hurdle is I believe you must have the cap space available to apply it. So Miami would have had a lot if work coming up with the cap space. The other risk sy for Miami is the player could just opt to play on the tag which is a large cap hit and no way to get out of it.

To add a little on the cap issue. With the Ramsey restructure we are still 3 mil over and have till Wednesday to be under. If we tagged Wilkins that would have been another 22 million we had to clear.
