Veteran cornerback Will Peterson was cut by the New York Giants on Friday, following his latest injury-plagued season.

Peterson, a third-round draft choice in 2001, played five seasons for the Giants, but two of the last three were severely curtailed by injuries.

``This is a very disappointing development for our ball club,'' general manager Ernie Accorsi said after terminating Peterson's contract. ``Will Peterson was a rising star cornerback and just ran into very tough luck last year with the back injury.''

Peterson's best season was 2004, when he started 15 games at right cornerback and had two interceptions and 69 tackles. But he suffered a knee injury in training camp last year and injured his lower back in Week 3. He was inactive for seven games before being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 7.
In five seasons, he started 39 games and had five interceptions and 199 tackles.

While the Giants ended Peterson's tenure in New York, they signed veteran quarterback Rob Johnson, who will try to win the job of backup to Eli Manning.

Johnson has spent nine years in the NFL, but he didn't play in 2004 or 2005 while recovering from arm surgery.

``We needed to add veteran depth at quarterback,'' Accorsi said. ``Rob hasn't played in a while because he was recovering from Tommy John surgery. But he has won in this league, is in great shape and threw the ball well in his workout.''

Johnson joins Tim Hasselbeck, Jared Lorenzen and Josh Harris as quarterbacks on the roster behind Manning.
Johnson began his NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995, under current Giants coach Tom Coughlin, and has also played for Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Washington and Oakland. He has been in 48 games, starting 29, and was a backup on the Super Bowl-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002.

He was an underachiever in New York, i think he's a fairly decent corner as was Will Allen, but they got unfairly criticized a lot of the time. Someone will pick him up and he'll do fine.....i hope it's not us though, i'd rather stay away from an all Giants secondary :)

I think the main thing is how he comes back from his injury
