For those who may not have been around, the Fins lost THREE key players to the short-lived World Football League in 1975. Csonka, Warfield and Kiick crippled Shula's plans for sustaining a Dolphin dynasty in the 70's.
The Fins defense kept them in games until they returned to the SB in the early 80's.

How does Ricky's retirement compare?

Ive already said in posts before that 1975 was way worse cus we were 2year superbowl champs at that time. We could have been the first team to win three in a row.

while that was bad it doesn't really compare as those 3 had finished their contract.

The Fins had already suffered the terrible playoff lost to Oakland to end the 74-75 season with these players. So the three rings in a row were not at stake when this trio jolted to the WFL. However, there is no doubt that our Fins chances of building a dynasty were seriously derailed with their move. Who knows, there may never have been a Pittsburgh dynasty if they would have stuck around.

History class in session

It does compare. However we still could have made it to 3 SBs because we still had them under contract for the 74 season so they were with us that season as well. We lost if you remember to the Raiders in the semi's 26-28 in what is regarded as one of the greatest games ever with those 3 players.

The difference is that every teammate understood why they left. In Csonka's case, he had the option of staying for $60,000 a year or making over a million a year. Remember that back then football players didn't get the huge NFL contracts. These guys worked in the offseason and after they retired from football. This was an opportunity for financial security. When asked most people admitted they would do the same thing. I don't remember much outrage directed at anyone but Joe Robbie (for being notoriously cheap). In this case, the feeling is betrayal. RW wants to leave right now and doesn't care who it hurts b/c he wants to smoke pot and contemplate his navel. Warranted or not the feeling is different.

No way this compares.... Miami was still a top team in the NFL..Just because the lost a heartbreaking game against Oakland in the playoffs didn't mean the dynasty was over... Losing the 3 players who didn't come back, I know Czonka did after a few seasons with the Jints, when the WFL folded hurt the Phins for anymore type of runs.

Depends on perspective....if you are looking at overall damage to the team then 1975 is worse. If you are looking at right and wrong then now is much worse. Losing 3 exceptionally talented players did lessen the '75 Phins chances much more than losing Ricky lessens the '04 Phins'. But, the guys in '75 had fulfilled their contracts and had in the process delivered 2 Superbowl victories. Largely because of those guys, most of their teammates had already won more championships than many players ever would. Plus, their teammates could claim an honor that NO other teams could...the undefeated season. So, Czonka, Kiick, and Warfield had more than delivered their fair share to the Dolphins by the time they left. In contrast, Ricky did not play out his contract, did not deliver a SB victory (or even a playoff berth) and left on the eve of training camp when a viable replacement was nearly impossible.

If we would have won two SBs in the time Ricky was here, I'd say do what ever you want, rasta boy, you paid your dues to this team.
