Mathias Nkwenti worked out

According to this morning's paper the phins had in Mathias Nkwenti a free agent OT from Pittsburg. Here is the little I have been able to find out about him. He was a RFA who was not tendered an offer sheet or at least had it withdrawn. 6'-3"-300. Originally a 4th round pick in 01 from Temple. He spent the end of last season on IR from a back injury. He played one game in '01 and one in '03.

Frank Coyle's Draft Insider's FA guide reports:

"Mobile young tackle has been buried on the depth chart in Steel City, but is one of the more interesting prospects available. He was injured late in the '03 season and missed an oppurtunity to get some playing time. He has good feet and the functional strength to be a good starter with further experiance. He is a type who will start for a while once he puts it all together."

I don't know that there is much to be interested in here unless his back is fully healed but this is a slow news time. Does anyone else have anything about him?

Nkwenti is a former defensive tackle who moved to offense as a senior and showed well. He is not a blaster, but he's quick at the snap and gets good initial position. Nkwenti is a promising pass blocker who sets quickly, plays with good knee bend and protects the outside well.

he's not dead, he's just resting.....................regarding Nkwenti, this is from TSN's draft guide, the Steeler's write-up. "The Steelers had so little faith in Mathias Nkwenti that they moved Alan Faneca from guard when [LT Marvel] Smith went down." So yes he is a lT prospect, maybe he has a chance to back up Wade Smith until McIntosh gets healthy?
