Who will shine enough among the undrafted to be kept around for training camp or maybe even the regular season, as wide receiver Davone Bess was two years ago and defensive lineman Ryan Baker was last year? How far from being even training-camp ready are players such as first-round draft pick Jared Odrick, second-round pick Koa Misi and fourth-round pick A.J. Edds, who are expected to contribute from the season's opening kickoff Sept. 12 in Buffalo.
That is not an exaggeration considering how many players in the Dolphins' draft class excel at special teams.
``A lot of these guys play special teams; there is not a projection there,'' Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said after the draft. ``Sometimes you go into drafting players that haven't played a whole lot of special teams in their senior season [of college]. A lot of these guys you have seen them do it; there is no projection in that regard. [Fifth-round pick] Nolan Carroll, [seventh-round pick Austin] Spitler, A.J. Edds, all those guys are core special teams players for sure.''
The Dolphins project Edds as an inside linebacker and gave him No. 54, the number worn by former Miami star middle linebacker Zach Thomas. Other numbers include: Odrick, a defensive tackle, No. 98; outside linebacker Misi, No. 55; Carroll, a cornerback, No. 28; fifth-round pick Reshad Jones, a safety, No. 35; seventh-rounder Chris McCoy, a linebacker, No. 48; and Spitler, the Dolphins' other seventh-round linebacker pick, No. 44.
The camp includes last week's draftees, rookie free agents and some eligible 2009 practice squad players
