IMO a good hire. Redmond was a guy many saw as a future manager. People may be hesitant because his only managerial experience was in Single A, but guys like Mike Metheny and Joe Girardi didn't have any coaching experience when hired to be manager.
He's a guy well respected within the organization due to his time with the Marlins, and he's a young enough manager where he can relate to the young guys.
While you can argue Ozzie got a bit of a raw deal, fact is he alienated a lot of people within the community and the organization (reports are that the only person who wanted to hire him was Loria) as well as a few non-latino players.
Also with this hire, half the managers in baseball are former catchers
