2006 NFL Mock Draft
1. Houston Texans- Reggie Bush, RB, USC
Pure lock here at No. 1. No real explanation needed.
2. New Orleans Saints- D’Brickashaw Ferguson OT, Virgina
If the Saints don’t trade this pick, look for them to draft Ferguson. The highly regarded Tackle will help rebuild this dismal O-Line and keep their QB Investment (Brees) off his *** a little less. Look for them to also take a long look at a Defensive playmaker such as DE Mario Williams or LB A.J. Hawk, or possibly a Jets.
3. Tennessee Titans - Matt Leinart, QB, USC
Norm Chow and Matt Leinart reunite. The Titans hope this Offensive connection from college can translate to the pros. This looks to be the best case scenario for the Titans. If Leinart is taken by the Jets earlier due to a trade, look for them to take Vince Young or Jay Cutler.
4. New York Jets - Mario Williams, DE, NC State
Best DE in a draft since Peppers? Everyone else thinks so and so will Rookie head coach Eric Mangini as he switches the Jets D to a 3-4. An explosive bookend to replace the glaring need left by Johnny Abraham. If the Jets trade up, look for them to lose their 29th pick as well and they will take a QB such as Leinart or Young.
5. Green Bay Packers - A.J. Hawk, OLB, Ohio State
After Barnett can you name a LB that plays for the Pack? No, thus being the only choice at No. 5 for the Packers to build on their lacking young D.
6. San Francisco 49ers - Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland
49ers have needed a catching capable TE for some time now, with Davis they get an absolute stud at the position. Has WR ability in a TE/LB frame. Also had one of the greatest TE combines ever. Great pick here.
7. Oakland Raiders- Vince Young, QB, Texas
Oakland, excuse me..Al Davis won’t pass up a specimen like Vince. Davis doesn’t care about wonderlic scores, he looks at physical tools.
8. Buffalo Bills - Winston Justice, OT, USC
Replaces the slot left by Mike Williams on the line. Young OT, with great footwork and strong moves.
9. Detroit Lions - Michael Huff, CB/S, Texas
No WR this year Millen? Huff is a tweener DB which helps him jump Jimmy Williams who is viewed as the best CB, can play at CB or Safety and only adds to the young D. Is a must have for a lacking Lions D who was in the 5-worst in Defense last year.
10. Arizona Cardinals - Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt
Denny Green realizes he has a little hole at QB. Kurt Warner is not as effective since he left St. Louis, so look for Denny to take Jay Cutler to groom behind Kurt for a season. Some belive Cutler is the QB of the draft, so it would be a good steal here at No. 10.
11. St. Louis Rams - Chad Greenway, LB, Iowa
LB need pick here. Greenway is a great player with a natural ability to play the LB position. He has great LB speed and instinct on the ball and where the play is going. Greenway was hurt by low combine numbers, but his Iowa pro day has lifted his stock back up pre-combine. St. Louis has many needs here, if not picking Greenway, look for them to go with either WR Chad Jackson, DT Haloti Ngata, or CB/S Jimmy Williams.
12. Cleveland Browns - Haloti Ngata, DT, Oregon
Huge, Strong run stuffer att he DT position for the Bills, a position that is old and unproductive in run support. Really fits the 3-4 Crennel runs.
13. Baltimore Ravens - Broderick Bunkley, DT, FSU
A quick DT that can stuff the run. If not taken here, look for the Raven to go with CB/S Jimmy Williams or CB Tye Hill.
14. Philadelphia Eagles- Chad Jackson, WR, Florida
Best WR in the draft that is very thin at WR. Very fast with adequate size at 6'1". Showed his good route running ability in college. .
15. Denver Broncos (From Atlanta) - DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis
A great pure RB in this draft with good hands and a compact size. This may be unorthodox for Shanahan to draft a RB in the first, but Williams is legit and is most compared to Curtis Martin. Behind the Denver line, look for him to go well above 1200 yards his first season.
16. Miami Dolphins - Jimmy Williams, CB, VT
Ball-hawk type player. Will be looked to as the next generation of the Miami secondary with Madison and Surtain gone in the last 2 years. If J-Will isn’t here at 16, look for the team to go for another big physical DB such as Jason Allen or Donte Whitner or one of the two WR Chad Jackson or Santonio Holmes if still available.
17. Minnesota Vikings - Ernie Sims, LB, FSU
Minnesota gets a young LB with a supper-high ceiling. He brings a lot of speed to a Defense that needs help at LB. Look for them too also look at a big DB.
18. Dallas Cowboys - Antonio Cromartie, CB, FSU
Jerry Jones and the Tuna won’t pass up a guy like Cromartie, he has all the tools in the world. If he adds bulk he might be a good fit at Free Safety. If not him, maybe a player such as LB Ernie Sims or S Jason Allen.
19. San Diego Chargers - Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State
Unproductive position of major need for the chargers to make the team complete. Get a speedy receiver with great return ability.
20. Kansas City Chiefs- Tye Hill, CB, Clemson
Tye Hill has had his stock rise and level off. Herm likes speedy corners and tye fits the mold of a Herm Edwards Defense. Other players of interest for KC here will be DE Tamba Hali or CB/S Donte Whitner.
21. New England Patriots - Donte Whitner, S/CB, Ohio State
The Patriots have a longing need at CB here. Donte fits perfectly because of his versatility.
22. Denver Broncos (from Washington) - Tamba Hali, DE, PSU
A huge, pass rushing DE with adequate speed at the position and strong hands to get through the line. Will be very productive.
23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Marcus McNeil, OT, Auburn
Tampa needs to address the O-Line and a 6'8" OT will more than certainly fill the hole.
24. Cincinnati Bengals - Darnell Bing, S, USC
Great coverage Safety with great ability to read the QB and a big-time hitter.
25. Chicago Bears - Leonard Pope, TE, Georgia
Pope is an extremely tall(6'7") TE with great blocking ability and huge mitts for catching the rock. Carolina gets a huge pick here.
26. New York Giants - Bobby Carpenter, OLB, Ohio State
Bobby will fill a glaring hole in the LB corps of the Giants.
27. Carolina Panthers - Marcedes Lewis, TE, UCLA
Young talented TE with great hands. Lacks great size for blocking, but is serviceable and was once a FB in college so has the tools to improve.
28. Jacksonville Jaguars - LenDale White, RB, USC
Reggie’s bigger counterpart at USC, LenDale is off to shaky start in this offseason with bad combine numbers and a slight hamstring injury, but all he did at USC was find the end-zone. Fred Taylor is also not getting any younger.
29. New York Jets (Denver Broncos) - Manny Lawson, LB/DE, NC State
LB/DE tweener with a great amount of speed for his size. Good fit for the new 3-4 D in New York.
30. Indianapolis Colts - Laurence Maroney, RB, Minnesota
Losing Edge hurts, so Dungy gets an agiole slasher like Maroney..
31. Seattle Seahawks - Johnathan Joseph, CB, South Carolina
Speedy CB who is shooting up draft charts. Will possibly start alongside Trufant and help the secondary greatly after Dyson left.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - Sinorice Moss, WR, Miami
Speedy WR to replace the void left from Randle El. May also look at RB’s Maroney or White if left on the board, or a Safety such as Jason Allen or Ko Simpson to fill the void left by Chris Hope.
