If the Vikings were to trade Smith they would like a vetran player(s) in return. The Vikes have Super Bowl asperations this year and are unwilling to weaken the 2004 team.

Smith the primary bait in potential trade talks

Running back Ricky Williams' sudden retirement over the weekend left the Miami Dolphins without a viable feature back just days before camp.
Trade rumors quickly circulated around the Vikings, who arguably have NFL's deepest backfield with former Pro Bowler Michael Bennett, second-year back Onterrio Smith, veteran Moe Williams and rookie Mewelde Moore.
The club is not actively shopping either back, but would listen to any trade proposal that includes veteran players, head coach Mike Tice told the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Monday's edition. Draft picks alone wouldn't sway the Vikings to make a deal.
Smith, who rushed for 579 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie and is slotted as Bennett's backup for 2004, is the most likely candidate.
He could become available in the right package, although Tice has expressed little interest in making any major roster changes so close to training camp. Players report on Friday.
Smith might lack the durability to take on Williams' heavy workload.
Williams took a league-high 80.5 percent of his team's carries in 2003. He racked up 775 carries in two seasons with the Dolphins, plus 97 receptions.
Smith, on the other hand, relinquished his role on special teams and was limited in practice late last season due to knee and hamstring problems. He has a surgically-repaired left knee, which combined with character issues to drop him into the fourth round of the 2003 draft.
He broke out for a pair of 100-yard efforts in December despite the injuries, but doubts remain about his ability to be a feature back over a full,16-game schedule.
Ironically, the Dolphins added to the Vikings' backfield depth through a draft-day trade in April. Miami swapped first-rounders with Minnesota, moving up one spot to No. 19 to select University of Miami offensive lineman Vernon Carey.
The Vikings moved down to No. 20 and selected the player they coveted, defensive end Kenechi Udeze. They also received a fourth-round pick (No. 119 overall) from the Dolphins -- and selected Tulane double-threat Moore.
Miami's best bargaining chip is defensive end Adewale Ogunleye, who remains unsigned for the upcoming season. Ogunleye, who recorded 15 sacks a year ago, drew interest from a handful of teams, including the Vikings, prior to the April draft.
The Vikings soon may have a glaring need at left end if starter Kenny Mixon, convicted in March on DUI charges, is suspended by the NFL.
As of Monday, the league had not ruled on a potential suspension. Tice said he expects a decision by the end of the week. If Mixon is fined but not suspended, the league would not formally announce the ruling.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus represents both Ogunleye and Mixon.
A suspension for Mixon likely would thrust veteran reserve Chuck Wiley into the starting lineup. The club would prefer to use Wiley as a situational run-stopper.
Minnesota also would like to add a veteran tight end in any potential deal. The Dolphins have five tight ends on their roster, including ninth-year veteran Ed Perry and John Jones, who is entering his fifth season.
The Miami Herald reported Monday that Colts running back Edgerrin James, a free agent at the end of the season, has told several people that he would love to play for the Dolphins. James played his college ball at the University of Miami.
Tony Hollings of Houston, Anthony Thomas of Chicago, Lamar Gordon of St. Louis and Najeh Davenport of Green Bay also would be possibilities if released by their respective teams, the Herald reported.
Etc.
o Negotiations with Udeze will resume in earnest Wednesday. Udeze's agent, Thomas Barnes, will meet with club officials at Winter Park. He said Monday that he expects "no difficulty" in finalizing a deal before camp opens Saturday.
o Discussions with the agents for second-round pick Dontarrious Thomas, third-rounder Darrion Scott and Nat Dorsey, one of the club's two fourth-round picks, are ongoing
