Smith said to have failed drug tests
By Chris Low / Sports Writer
KNOXVILLE -- Multiple failed drug tests led to Onterrio Smith's dismissal from the Tennessee football team, according to two sources within the UT athletic department.

Smith, a sophomore tailback, was dismissed Wednesday for what Coach Phillip Fulmer called a violation of team rules.

The drug policy at Tennessee stipulates that any athlete failing his first test undergo drug counseling and that his parents be notified. That athlete is subject to suspension or dismissal following a second failed test.

Fulmer said Wednesday that Smith's dismissal had nothing to do with his pending court case, his academics or his performance on the field.

"It's simply a young man that couldn't follow the rules, and he won't be with us," Fulmer said yesterday.

It's been a tumultuous last few months for Smith. He was arrested in January in his hometown of Sacramento, Calif., for allegedly striking the mother of his 2-year-old daughter. Smith was charged with misdemeanor battery and is scheduled to face trial on May 22.

Smith didn't return in time for the start of semester classes, and Fulmer suspended him for the first part of spring practice.

Smith, ordered by Fulmer to perform community service and fulfill other obligations, was reinstated to the team on March 31 and finished the remainder of spring practice.

Last Sunday morning, Smith was involved in an automobile accident at approximately 5 a.m. (CDT) while backing out of parking lot on campus behind the Gibbs Hall dormitory. According to a UT police report, Smith side-swiped a parked car.

One of the Vols' top breakaway threats, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Smith scored all four of his touchdowns in the final two regular-season games last year and scored on a 78-yard screen pass in the Orange and White game.

Onterrio Smith was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft.

Onterrio made some mistakes in college...

....but I believe he has put the past behind him.
