Top offensive guards available for Dolphins

That is a very expensive list!

All the more reason to go Quenton Nelson at 11, if he is even there.

That pick should ballpark around 4 for $16m with the fifth year option for as close to a day one Pro Bowler, not bad.

I dont see any reason to not pay for elite talent... You rarely get burned with elite players, you know exactly what you're going to get. Elite players rarely hit the FA market, so what happens most years is that the top players at their position get paid elite money even though they don't fit the bill... This is how you end up in cap hell with marginal talent... ie: When Suh got paid, he was a top 5 DT, hell he might've been a top 5 defensive player and he didnt bomb. We got exactly what we expected. Now Landry is going to get elite money, he's not a top 5 WR, the team that signs him wont get what they paid for...

Suh's contract is not what's holding this team back... It's guys like Branch, Alonso, Timmons that add up capspace tied up in limited players...
 
Yeah, it will be expensive to get an upgrade. With all the talent at DT now in the NFL, the guard position is definitely getting some love.

If the problem isn't solved in free agency, Miami should use a high pick (I'd prefer 2nd round) to get a guard.
 
Zach Martin is a free agent after next season
should be very interesting to see what he gets

Oh it would have been nice to have an offensive lineman
who last season on 564 pass blocking snaps
didn't allow a QB hit or a sack

We disagree. With Miami having multiple DEEP holes, the more holes filled the better. Saving $4mm getting a top third OG (I made that number up), gives a dramatic upgrade over Bushrod and leaves $4mm to either sign an additional player of gives $4mm to add to an offer for a targeted TE or DE. Yes, elite is better than top third, but that elite player may force Miami to keep a deep hole.
No, I'm against paying for elite when the there are so many holes. I may say this too often, but the difference between top teams and bottom teams is top teams have holes, but not DEEP holes. Top teams have a LOT of average players.

I have no idea why people around here expected anything different. If a player is drafted in the 5th round, they're not drafted there to get significant playing time, they're a developmental project.

Now if we drafted Asiata in the 3rd round, I would have expected him to make some sort of contribution. But as a 5th rounder? Getting anything out of a fifth rounder their rookie season would be entirely unexpected.

I wish I knew more about how the coaches see his development through last season. I was thinking the plan last season would be to prepare him for this season, but all this talk about FA guards has me worried the plan has not gone as expected.
 
Jack Mewhort is a sh-t run blocker, and an OK pass blocker. But I suppose that $1.1 million per year estimate takes account of that.

I'd pay attention to Patrick Omameh since Miami had interest in him last year and he only helped himself out with the year he had for Jacksonville.

From a personal standpoint, I really like Zach Fulton a whole lot. I think Senio Kelemete may be worth a look based on what I've heard, but I haven't looked at him myself. I've always been partial to Matt Tobin.

Many moons ago, there was a zone-specialist guard that bounced around different NFL teams, including the Miami Dolphins if you can believe it, but kept getting cut and couldn't find a home. He found a home in Philadelphia and for a stretch of about four or five years became known as probably the best guard in football. That was Evan Mathis.

There's no downside to continuing to dust off these pennies, see which ones have talent and just haven't had the right opportunity to show it. When I think of an Omameh, a Fulton, or a Tobin, that's what I'm thinking. Again I'd add Kelemete to that list but I've not personally watched him play football.

(incidentally why do I get the feeling that when I say some of this stuff here, it ends up in Neil Driscoll's twitter feed?)

Good point. Those are some long contracts, too. The length of the contracts might give them some room to work, guaranteeing more money to free early signing bonus money for Martin. Yeah, the Cowboys FO has some interesting challenges and choices ahead :)
