Minkah Fitzpatrick Would Like An Answer From The Dolphins On This Key Question

I'm a huge fan of Minkah Fitzpatrick. He's the type of leader we need. He does the hard work and film study like Zach Thomas and is the physical specimen we always wanted. But a slot CB isn't as valuable as a free safety. I'd rather have the next Ed Reed than the next great slot CB. Fitzpatrick has the speed and ball skills to be a great FS, and IMHO, that's exactly where he needs to play. Boundary CB's are far more valuable than slot CB's, and a great FS like Earl Thomas is probably even more valuable than a cornerstone CB.

Fitzpatrick is right, he wants to know so he can start preparing. I'm hoping the next Dolphins head coach lets him know ASAP, and that he decides to make Fitzpatrick a FS. We've needed a true FS for decades now.
Well before Bobby was moved outside he was considered a top 5 slot corner and should have stayed there. It's why I thought they paid him. But the lack of talent to fill that 2nd spot forced a panic move and they placed him outside. had they adjusted and emphasized coaching I'm certain They could have gotten something out of Tank before he was injured. But the MO of Gase's staff were poor schemes and a reluctance to coach players

Love Minkah!

A leader in the mold of Zach and JT, Duhe, Seau, Marino, Moore….

Minkah is one of the very few reasons I can even watch this team anymore. Hopefully the new coach will bring some respect back to the Fins!

Gase/Brock/Burke/CocaineCoach/Cutler/Loggains/etc… were embarrassments.

Xavien Howard and Minkah Fitzpatrick are going to wreak havoc for us for the next decade.

I'm with ya. Reshad Jones' best spot is SS, but he split a lot of time playing FS just to accommodate TJ McDonald. Then Bobby McCain's best spot is Slot, but he played Boundary CB2 because we didn't have anyone to play that spot. IMHO, Minkah Fitzpatrick's best position is FS, but he played Slot to cover for Bobby when Bobby had to play CB2. So, we have 4 good secondary players--SS Reshad Jones, FS Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB1 Xavien Howard and Slot Bobby McCain--and only one of those guys was played in his best position. That one guy was Xavien Howard, and he had a fantastic year. Everyone else could have played in their best position, but dumazz Burke played the other three guys out of position, and none of them had a particularly good year.

Here's a thought, play our best players in their best roles, Reshad Jones at SS, Minkah Fitzpatrick at FS, and Bobby McCain at Slot. We lack a CB2 … here's a thought, let's get a person to play that position!

Our defense was bad last year, but it had far better personnel than its production suggested. Playing players at their best positions is an obvious place to start. Our next coaching staff needs to understand that.

Oh My God!!! Can this damn organization get anything right ? Minkah Fitzpatrick is a natural Free Safety!!!! They did the same stupid thing to Jason Allen in 2006. They tried to make him a CB and ruined his career. Now they are actually thinking about doing the same thing with Fitzpatrick? This is why Grier should not have been retained. They obviously drafted a player who they had no idea how he was going to be used. Man, I'm so pissed off I could break this damn keyboard.

I have no clue why you are so worked up lol. He will find out his position as soon as we hire a coach....dial down the diva a bit.

You're not getting the best Minkkah has to offer if you put him at free safety IMO... Not the way most teams are playing the game these days... Guy needs to be around the ball and there are just too many ways OCs can scheme him out of the game when he's there...
Explain....

Position specific movement, really important to master the footwork and technique of each position.

I would tell him to learn them all lol.

Calm down man, the front office doesn’t determine what position a player will play on Sundays. That’s the coach’s call. If you want to be upset at the front office, focus on the fact we paid two SSs on big contracts with no way out. Minkah being a stud at slot and safety is not a problem.

Ed Reed didn't seem to get schemed out of too many games at that position.

Free safety would waste Fitz strengths his best position is slot corner back let him camp at cb play him cb in base and slide him to nb if you watch his best games from college he played cb and slot back . Free safety will be wasting his talents . I can’t see a coach having him at free only 30 yards off the ball. Totally depends on your coaching staff I don’t know why anyone would say He’s a natural free safety he’s played the most slot cb in his career and plays it at a high level. Makes total sense why he would like to know his training and weight would need to be different The reason RJ was upset with playing free your stats are effected . I don’t think you should take him from slot to me the question is where do you play him in base free or cb

The way I see it, free safeties make the most impact on plays down the field which happen sparingly during games and are already low % plays to begin with. Of course having a great FS helps your defense tremendously, but Im not sure thats where I want my best(or 2nd best) defensive player to be. Teams can dink donk their way to the end zone keeping everything in front of him. Especially when talking about Minkah who does so many other things at a high level.

There are alot of ways to be creative with a player like Fitzpatrick, he can and will make plays all over the field, most of his great plays this season never happen if he's playing deep. He's great at defending screens, you can put him on guys in man and he also excels there. It's not like the guy has to learn doing those things, in fact, thats exactly what he's been doing in college. If anything, its the FS position that'd involve a learning curve for him, not the other way around...

I realize there are good arguments on both sides here, my stance is that Minkah would impact this defense alot more if you move him around and get him closer to the LOS a good portion of the time.

Fitzpatrick will be good at FS or CB. He's a good athlete, with solid fundamentals, and he's very smart; however, being an elite FS requires more than that. It requires high-end instincts - the ability to break on the ball/see the play quicker than is reasonably possible. That's what made Ed Reed so great, and that's what makes Earl Thomas so great. Neither were as fast as Fitzpatrick, and I don't think that either of them were particularly smarter. Their reaction times, though, were much, much quicker.

As I see it, Fitzpatrick has more upside at CB. He didn't do the agility drills coming out of college, but he posted a ridiculous 3.87 20-yard shuttle coming out of HS, and his agility is apparent. Match that with good speed and a solid frame, and you have a guy with some real upside at CB, which is the more expensive position anyway.

He's never going to be an Ed Reed, and you're never going to maximize his strengths at FS (again, the cheaper position). He can be good there, but you drafted him at 11 overall. Play him at CB where he has a chance to really thrive.

Another note, Ed Reed and Earl Thomas are RARE for a reason. Everyone wants some young player to be them, but you can't eat with hope.

You can play FS without playing deep middle every snap.
Of course not, but hey dont affect the short game much, or at all, they're rarely in man coverage and most of their work involves centerfield type zones or bracketing WRs... Moving him around only makes it tougher on opposing OCs to game plan against him. I dont see any down side in doing this...
