Same Old Line? New Miami Dolphins Assistant Pat Flaherty Hopes Not

Not to derail this "Ricky" thread....

For the longest time I haven't been able to understand the lack of progress with our O-Line….It's baffling that no coach and no matter which players line up … we still have no clue when it comes to QB protection or a consistent run game.... maybe I have missed something around the league but other teams (even with shaky O-Lines) seem to overcome their flaws and make it work.... we haven't...

I hope this new regime has the answers … it can't be solely a lack of talent.... imo it has to be coaching, scheme and the inability to adjust the game plan on the fly (QB?)…. I'm not sure where the real problem is but I know other teams figure it out ….. this issue has been going on long enough.

Ricky was fine, well for Rickey until Wrongstadt ran his mouth about fixing the OL, then didn't make 1 move to get help there. I believe he dwafted a winebacker for spwesol tweems...

And not just the OL coach. The OC gets some of the blame - not calling roll outs, or no quick throws. Nothing to help the OL. I keep going back to the Gase classic . . . having Gesicki block the opponent's best pass rusher one-on-one. Or the apparent ability of the D to 'know the play call.' Yeah, that's a digression, but I want to show I recognize problems other that the OL coach.

That said, you're right. Inability to manage stunts and blitzes if a clear example. A few times two OLmen blocked the same guy. Things that should be basic line play 101. A few 'good' OLmen have been brought in, only to play poorly. How Miami can get such poor OL coaches consistently for so long amazes me. I hope it stops in '19

We will see if he can elevate Jesse Davis game to match the athlete or if he’s maxed out

If they let James walk, I wonder if they will contemplate moving him to RT. I hate moving guys around this much but I could see them doing it since they won't be trying to win anyway this season.

Should have had Anquan Boldin there.

In any case, that 2002 OL was one of the best we've had in quite some time...nothing has been matched since.

we've been trying to fix the o-line for so long. I do hope they can get it done this time around. It'd help the whole team a lot to have a great O-line.

I've been in the JESSE DAVIS is a RT 1st, OG 2nd. I think that's where he fits best. Let JAMES walk, save his money for X.

It is a real head scratcher. Maybe drafting linemen was one of Tbums many shortcomings. I know the problems predate him, and Gase, but it has gotten worse the past few years. Injuries have taken its toll recently, but I don't think the schemes have been effective either.

Going away from a power running scheme to a ZBS imho played a vital factor. "Out with the maulers with a pissed off you took my lunch $$$ type attitude; In with the athletic finesse light on the feet type of O-lineman".

in beginning off season dolphins line played good but toward end w lots of injury. it seem that protection call at line between QB and line was terrible. some of sack were thill17 and sometime it was miss communication on line and who block. causing pass rusher to run free to qb. if they can fix that oline will be better.

Philbin's short pass based offense with finesse linemen to execute his blocking schemes resulted in nothing good. Then, Gase continued this same garbage getting the same results. The new regime needs to go old-school on the line!

Neither Queasy, nor especially Gase, knew their own limitations, let alone those of the players.
