Compensatory picks have been a disaster of an idea in my opinion. Clearly the two Superbowl teams getting massive hauls means the system is broken. Why on Earth do we need to reward teams for having smart front offices? That's already a reward in itself.

The Patriots lost Solder, Amendola, Lewis and Butler. Good players for sure, but nothing amazing. They get two thirds a sixth and a seventh for that. I bet Bill would actually rather have the picks.

But while the system is around we need to start using it. No more free agents, we need to build almost exclusively through the draft and not be afraid to let guys go who aren't blue chip.
 
And of course we got none. That's been our FO for the last 20 years
 
Where I see something wrong with the system with the comp picks is Washington getting the highest pick for loosing cousins when they traded for smith
 
I agree with you @Jimi that the league is probably better off without compensatory picks, but I don't think it's a huge deal either way. The goal is parity, and the idea of compensatory picks in an era of free agency seems to run against that idea of parity. But, since top contenders are more likely to gain FA's at a lower price than terrible teams (e.g. Cleveland vs. New England if they're in contention for the same FA), then it becomes even worse. Arizona losing a FA to New England potentially gets less of a return than New England does losing a FA to Arizona, because to even get the guy, Arizona has to pay them more since they're not contenders.

The whole system is flawed. It just makes the salary cap more of a penalty for non-contenders … or teams in states with state taxes.

And now you can trade comp picks, more ammo for New England to move around and draft players they want.

Exactly. There are so many players that walked and would've netted a comp pick if the idiots making decisions could've kept it in their pants. The fins didn't have to moneyball Wilson and Amendola as Landry replacements ... which I believe was quintupling down on stupid ... but it's hard to keep track.

It's not that they should be penalized, they just shouldn't be rewarded extra from the league. Do away with the system entirely. But while it's here, let's hope our new people know how to work it.
 
Not to mention Tom Brady was a comp pick. Hard to believe every team had six shots at him. Some teams had seven!

Personally, I would do away with the comp picks as I think the salary cap is the equalizer. If you look at comps, I wouldn't be surprised is New England, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have the most over the years.
