How I do respect Wes Welker for his spirited tough play and "johnny on the spot"-ness, I am really not feeling the comparisons to Camarillo. Let me admit that Welker has the better numbers at this point in their respective careers, but who wouldn't with arguably one of the best QB's to ever play the game tossing him the pigskin?
Besides that fact, there is not really much these two have in common IMO...Welker is and has done most of his work from the slot, which is the position that he is best suited to play. He could never really be as effective from a true #2 WR position, he is just flat out not that type of receiver, Camarillo is!
When have you ever seen Wes "run away" from anyone? Even if the defender misses him on the initial tackle, he knows that he has the "foot speed" advantage and can easily reel him back in...Which is the reason that Welker rarely broke the 40yd line on most returns, even when he made a "great" move to get into the open field.
If Welker is the one making that catch against the Ravens last year, we go 0-16 my friends! Because there is no doubt in my mind that he would've caught that pass, but absolutely no chance that Welker outruns that Ravens defense to the endzone...period!
Greg is a very solid route runner and has excellent hands, very tough and also shows the ability to take it to the house if the defense slips. A true "quiet" leader, that lets his "on-field" play speak for him...Thats the reason that the new regime's FO decided to wrap this guy up for X-mas.
I am sure that there are people that are still in love with Wes down here, as I said before, the guy was a real competitor. However, we have another Wes Welker on the team already for those WW lovers...
He has dreads, shows exceptional hands/quickness, catches punts in traffic, plays the slot as well, probably won't break the big run after the catch, but will most definitely make the catch and take the hit...
Any clue who I could be referring to?
That guy is a better fit to be compared to Welker IMO...Greg is just a different WR to me, he has the better skill set to hurt a defense for the big play downfield.
I think that my observations will be proven this Sunday, as we shut Welker down in his own backyard...Greg will make some huge play to lead us to victory, no doubt at all in my mind. He isn't Pro Bowl material IMO, but he is a solid #2 that you can plug into your offense in order to get the job done.
Good luck Phins! I wish Sunday was here already!
GO PHINS!
