Can Irish's team avert the same fate this time around?

2009
WEEK RECORD RANK COMMENT
Week 18 7-9 21 The Dolphins collapsed down the stretch, but Bill Parcells has established a solid team with a good young quarterback. (Clayton)
Week 17 7-8 20 The Dolphins' inability to contain quality passing teams cost them this season. (Clayton)
Week 16 7-7 16 The Dolphins' playoff run could be intercepted by a few more bad throws by developing quarterback Chad Henne. (Clayton)
Week 15 7-6 13 By climbing over the Jags, the Dolphins have a decent shot at a wild-card berth. (Clayton)

2010
Week 18 7-9 22 Everyone's job is on the line with the horrible way the Dolphins finished. (Clayton)
Week 17 7-8 18 It's still hard to believe the Dolphins finished 1-7 at home. (Clayton)
Week 16 7-7 17 It sure seems as though Bill Parcells sensed something when he stepped down as Miami's decision-maker in what has turned out to be a disappointing season. (Clayton)
Week 15 7-6 16 Tony Sparano's conservative style has the Dolphins hanging around at a respectable 7-6. (Clayton)

Did I miss something? According to BSPN there are 18 weeks in the season

only the dolphins can ****ing go 7-9 and finish ****ing 1-7 at home.

imagine if we even ****ing went 4-4 at home, which is still pretty poor for home, we would have 10 ****ing wins and prob have made playoffs.

This team hasn't gotten lucky in its wins like a lot of those Dolphins teams did. With poor pass defense, little turnover ability, and poor/inconsistent QB play, those Dolphins teams could have easily been 5-8 at that point. With us, we've gone about winning games with a respectable passing offense along with occasionally clutch QB play, a pass defense that is actually capable of severely restricting even top WR's, characteristics that the previous Dolphin teams sorely lacked, I can remember far more games where we got unlucky losing this season than the opposite. Yes, I know real teams make their own luck sometimes, but there is a greater capability for winning and higher caliber weapons on this team than Sparano had at his disposal. 8-8 could happen, 9-7 while missing the playoffs could happen, but I don't see this team not being ready enough to play to at least beat one division rival in the next three weeks, as long as Tannehill stays healthy at least (even then there is a good chance Matt Moore does well enough, but its difficult to predict what a guy who has played one game in two years could do).

The thought crossed my mind as I thought you were for real in 2009 and I think you are now. I hope for me history repeats itself, I hope for you guys it doesn't.

Past doesn't matter....few players from those teams are still on the roster...I my regret having a restored faith in the Dolphins, but something "feels" different about this team....I can't quantify it with a stat, but the way they have conducted themselves the last month has me believing in this team.

Philbin+Tannehill > Soprano + Henne

with the bye weeks, I can't keep up, it throws me off, I thought we were playing the Patriots up North, only to find out we're playing them in Miami, so I am excited about that.

I'd love to go to that game.

Now thats hilarious in hindsight.

I was thinking about 2009 and 2010 the other day as well, but there was a big difference between the finishes those two years.

In 2009 the Dolphins started 0-2, so they were clawing back the whole year just to stay in play-off contention. And then they lost 3 tightly contested games to finish the season, all three games against teams also in the play-off race. Yeah, it sucked to lose those games, but at least they weren't getting blown out, or losing to crap teams. And they really could/should have won the Tennessee and Pittsburgh games.

The finish to 2010 was a ridiculous derpfest where the Dolphins lost home games in December to crappy teams like Cleveland, Buffalo (Carp missed 4 freaking field goals in a 3-point loss), and Detroit (blew a large second half lead, if I am not mistaken). The only game they won in December, if I remember correctly, was an almost unwatchable game in New York against the Jets (the game with the Jets coach/Nolan Carroll sideline incident) that was far more about the Jets losing than the Dolphins winning. And then they simply gave up in the finale at New England and got blown off the field. I still think the finish to 2010 should have been when Sparano got canned.

I know the record shows that both teams started 7-6 and finished 7-9, but I felt very differently after those seasons ended. I was disappointed after 2009, but just flat-out embarrassed to be a Dolphins fan after 2010.

Even with the BYe weeks its still only 17 weeks. For whatever reason Clayton decided to include the final preseason game as week one.
