just take a look at our starting D:

K.Carter - 31
K.Traylor - 35
V.Holliday - 29
J.Taylor - 30
C.Crowder - 21
Z.Thomas - 31
J.Seau - 36
S.Madison - 31
T.Daniels - 22
L.Schulters - 30
T.Tillman - 27

thats an average of 29.3 years old, our D is pretty good but it lacks youth and as a result, speed. Next year we have to make a point to get younger on D.

My Solution - trade Madison and replace him with W.Poole (age 24), retire J.Seau and sign J.Peterson (age 27), replace K.Traylor with K.Vickerson (age 22), and start to play M.Wright (age 21) at DT.

these moves with both make our defense youger and better. these moves are based on talent as well as youth. plus depending on what happens in the draft we can maybe get a better safety or CB.

We do have teh oldest defense in the league right now and we are doing ok. imagine a younger quicker defense like we had 3-4 years ago where there woudl be 5 dolphins where the ball was. basically exactly like yest. game on how the falcons were with us. always 4-5 defenders like we USE to be.

Why do we need to be faster at DT? The point of a DT is clog the middle & stop the run.

Poole & Madison both run 4.5 40s, so that would be a lateral movement & Poole is also coming off a knee injury so Madison is probably faster.

Subbing in two guys (Poole & Vickerson) coming of serious knee injuries will not improve the speed of the D.

everhone knows that our D must get younger but in no way is it a problem..

everyone on list over 30 (except Sam) is doing a great job

so, i ask you, what is the problem
?

Younger doesn't always mean better. The team has a decent mix of young players and veterans on D right now. You also left Roth off your list...he can't be more than 22 or 23.

Have you watched Traylor and Carter play this year? They don't seem to be slowing down at all.

Now if we dont konw the problem we aqre in seroius trouble. We do need to become quicker and improve our secondary along with the lb core. we will be ogod with a tank williams/archuleta, Lance, madison/poole along side a clement n daniels. ohh yea, wiht a peterson or aj hawk/greenway as well. :)

for right nwo he deserves to be forgotten. until he shows that he is a 2nd roudner he shouldn't be mentioned. i am very dissapointing so far with him. Wright is closer to playing then roth has been playing

my moves are not based on speed alone, they are to help the D get better. Madison is declining in his career while Poole looked really good this offseason and improved his technique. Vickerson was looking really good at ST before the injury and Traylor may be thinking retirement soon. If he stayed then I'd welcome him back.

again, this is not about the speed or youth alone. Roth has yet to play worthy of starting

No, but he is a part of the rotation. And he is young.

Have Vickerson, Wright and Poole played worthy of starting?

Vickerson was before he was hurt on a cheap hit, Poole was playing well this offseason and was projected to start

Then why start with the title you did?
I said the #1 problem, not the only problem. Speed has been a problem in our secoundary this year

Not really the only, Howard technique is just as horrible as his speed. Which two players on the passing game killed us yesterday? Finneran and Crumpler, neither are speed demons. As for Poole he, like SM29 said, he is just as slow as Madison and coming off major knee surgery. So he won't really be the best solution if you feel speed is a problem.

I don't think it's as big a problem as the ages indicate. Saban signed NT Traylor, DT Holliday, SS Tebucky (31), & LB Spragnan (29) to 2 year contracts plus Schulters to a 1 year deal. Not to mention holdovers Seau, Zgonina (35), & Bowens (28) all have contracts expiring in 2006. This will be a defense getting younger by 2007. Just don't have all the draft picks to do it in one year.

Other older defensive players with longer deals are Taylor, Thomas, Madison, Carter & Howard (28). Carter's got a good contract and isn't going anywhere. Howard isn't going to be paid a $2 million salary in 2006, plus he sucks and is gone. The big 3 of Taylor, Thomas, & Madison count a combined $24+ million against the cap. Think all three will be asked to restructure contracts, with only Madison asked to take a significant pay reduction ($3.42 million salary). But even if Sam refuses, don't think he'll be cut/traded, not a lot of depth at CB.
