What's the main problem with the Run Defense?

1) Personel
2) Scheme
3) Coaching

Certainly, it's a combination of all of the above. But, from my perspective it almost looks like we're too small and not strong enough in the trenches. Routinely, it seems like the Ravens Oline is pushing our guys around. Also, it doesn't help that our LBs get caught in traffic and the wrong Gaps way to consistently.

It almost seems like we've sacrificed Run stoping ability (As some said when we left Big Paul go for quickness).

What's your thoughts?

The problem is Odrick and Stark are not very goid. Don't know what happened to Starks this year but he's had a bad year. Our DEs are not very good playing the run and we miss too many tackles so imo is personnel

What happened to Starks is 11 seasons and 168 games

It's a good question. Miami went from defending the run pretty well most of the season to very vulnerable in that department over the last three weeks.

In the Denver game, missed tackles probably counting for 50-60 extra rushing yards for Denver so that is an area of concern. Miami is obviously built more to rush the passer, but that won't matter if you can't defend the run better.

I have to agree with this in addition to the LB situation. Those two are routinely pushed out of the way leaving gaping holes. It's so bad that th RB usually has more than one option to choose from.

I think thats because they weren't really tested. If you think about it teams that were "willing" to run early in the season like KC were successful. Unfortunately for us, the secret is now completely out of the bag now.

There wasn't a problem with the run yesterday. We had it stuffed. There were two long runs and I saw holding on the first one not called.

Not a problem?....lol.....they ran for 186 yards and that wasn't a problem?

Don't have a run stuffing Dlineman.

Our 2 best run stoppers are Jenkins and Jones. They are usually having blockers in there face because our Dline doesn't get push.

2 long runs are still runs. 183 yards given up speaks for itself.

Something else thats really interesting that I noticed before. Additionally, I think it was "CK" iirc that predicted it from the very beginning. #90's style Mitchell actually creates huge positives and negatives. Mainly, his penetration if timed properly is great but man does it creates 'HUGGGEEE" holes when he goes the wrong way.

I mean HUGEEE...It's almost..hell its exactly like he's creating running lanes.

Compounded, if you don't have the LB's to fill those holes quickly any decent back is looking about about 3-4 yards before the 1st contact.

There's not much scheme involved in stopping the run. It's mostly personnel and desire. Starks has fallen off the face of the earth this season...complete disappearing act. We're undersized up front and built to play with a lead...similar to the old Colts teams when Manning was there. There needs to be a new philosophy going forward and the personnel to change it. Detroit has the #1 rush defense in the league...it's no surprise they also have the most dominating DT in the league. You can't single block Suh...and when you double team him the other players on that D-line win their one-on-one matchups. We've got no one winning one-on-ones consistently...no one.
