10-19 Michael Lombardi on Joe Rose - interesting comments

Probably true, but is essentially "back story" since Mrs Harbaugh, like Mrs Palmer had a specific geographic mandate and Harbaugh having turned Stanford around, already was like a king in SF.

7mil a year is a hell of a incentive to change your location! I wouldn't be surprised if his brother warned him off too. What we Di know is both Harbaugh and Cowher won't work with Ireland!

theres no way ross should get a pass for the harbaugh thing...and its not because harbaugh didn't come...fine you tried...but you never ever never retain a head coach after word gets out that you've pursued a replacement one...it undermines any respect the players will have for the lame duck returning...and that contract extension we gave sparano afterwards...players see through that stuff...they know the owner doesn't even have sparanos back...why should they???

ross screwed the pooch on that one royally...ross has a piece of this craptastic pie just like sparano and ireland do...and his is larger than many think

Ross was smart enough to realize that during a lockout you can't start over from scratch. I'm sure he wanted Harbaugh and he planned to keep Ireland, but things have changed and just the fact that he's consulting Eric Mangini about the state of the team goes to show you that Ireland IS NOT safe.

We can suck for Luck all we want, the key to turning this franchise around falls solely on the new regime.

I'm a fan of Ireland, I thought he has drafted well. But it does make sense if you bring in a coach outside of Ireland's "tree" and not someone thats a staff on the team already, you need to fire him. The GM and coach need to be on the same page and know each other. I'm sure whoever the next coach is, probably won't have much, if at all, experience working with Ireland.

Best situation: Fire Tony and Ireland. Hire a new coach and GM that know each other/worked together and start from scratch, and hopefully that scratch is with andrew luck.

Ireland must go. If you look at his draft picks, trade acquisitions, and the way he handled the Sparano situation last year.......the writing is on the wall. I cant really think of any impact players he has added since he started. Jake Long was a safe pick, but he isnt going to win any Superbowls for us. The only other pick wohth mentioning is Vontae Davis. He finds good players at in the later rounds or undrafted at a discount........but picks in the early rounds are questionable, not to mention the people he passes up in those rounds.

Solid suggestion in retorspect........get Reggie Bush and keep Ricky Williams. Both can be productive when used properly as a tandem. Pouncey was a mediocre pick at 15, but by the looks of our line play, it was warranted (just not sexy). With the second round pick, we should have picked up Mallet (who I still think was the best QB in the draft). If he was playing instead of Moore, or if he started over Henne to begin with, I think our season would look a little different. Even if we were losing, Dolfans would still be happy knowing that our franchise QB is still learning the NFL.

Now we have to hope we suck for Luck. Which is just pathetic.

I'm tired of the "Ross is clueless" crap. He's not clueless and he does care about his franchise. Just because you hear crap in the media or on Finheaven doesn't mean anything. I feel that Ross is a smart business owner and will do the right thing. You have to remember that it takes time to make smart decisions and you also have to have the right timing on decisions. You can't make a hire or fire just because Finheaven member 101 said so.....

Mrs. Ross? Is that you? Thanks for commenting here on FinHeaven! I'm sure Stevie appreciates your vote of confidence. First one we've seen in these here parts...

Is Michael Lombardi the ex-NFL GM who is now doing media gigs because he got his butt fired for being a terrible talent evaluator? If this Lombardi is one and the same, I'd hardly take his "advice" and "claims" to heart.

I think that the Fins lost out on Harbaugh primarily because they didn't fire Sparano before pursuing any new HC. Say whatever you want, that was a totally unclassy move, and I think that no coach who wasn't desperate for a job would have taken the Fins job with Sparano still on the payroll as "HC".

It may also be that Harbaugh still would have turned Miami down. Stanford is not particularly far from San Francisco, so Harbaugh may not even have had to buy a new house when taking the Niners job unless he wanted to do so. I also think that the life-style in Nocal is significantly different from life in South Florida to have had considerable influence on Harbaugh's decision.

This has worked out well for the Bills with Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey. They operate as a team, and are "on the same page" when it comes to evaluating players. Nix has a good eye for talent, knows the kinds of players Gailey likes, and respects his opinions.

Ross is clueless. It all comes down to him. He owns the product. The product sucks!!! The buck stops with him. Period.

Ross is now painted into a corner, he will lean on someone like Carl Peterson for suggestions as well as others outside the organization. Ross is a business man and right now business is bad, it isn't making him money.

Cower openly said that he wants totally control if he comes back to the NFL, translation, Ross better not even come a knocking if Ireland is still GM if he wants a snowballs chance in hell of landing Cower. The right thing to do is fire Tony and then Jeff, then go make an offer to Bill if he wants him. It is the only way to save face, make it look good in the public eye and entertain the notion of landing Cower.

If you talk to Cower or anyone now, already knowing he/they want total control and Ireland is still in the GM roll, it suggests to whoever you interview for coach or coach/GM "what is Ross going to do behind my back if I falter"

It's a slippery slop and Ross better have learned from the Harbaugh mess that the order which you play the cards sometimes determines if you win or lose.

If part of the reason that Harbaugh didn't want to come here was Ireland, then you can bet that Oliver Luck won't like him, either.

All of these guys need to go. Plain and simple.

Ross learned a lesson the hard way and publicly... But seriously... You put all this on Ross??? You gonna hang all of it on a new owner who does not understand the politics of the game? He identified the best man for the job and he went after him hardcore... exactly like you do in business.

He depends on his football men to advise him, in this case Ireland... Jeff should have NEVER let him get on that plane... NEVER... By allowing it, he sunk the blade deep between the shoulders of his 'friend' Tony... I'm surprised those two even talk to each other... Heck maybe they don't but one thing is certain... we have a completely dysfunctional FO and Ross, like everyone else in this sorry excuse for a family, is learning on the job..

Give him this... he was NOT WRONG in who he went after or WHY... it was HOW HE DID IT... Nothing more.

LOL, have you ever been married? An unhappy, crabby relocated wife and family ain't worth the additional $1-2Mil if you're already up in the high rent district to begin with. Look at Terry Saban, pizzing and moaning while living there in a mansion on Ft Lauderdale's Intracoastal Millionaires Row.

Well, to be clear on point 2, Lombardi said:

Harbaugh already had a relationship with the GM of the 49ers. He simply didn't know Ireland and that was the point of that and he explained it that way.

Also, Lombardi even admitted it was an uphill battle since Harbuaghs roots are in the Bay Area. So let's not pretend Ross bringing Ireland along blew the whole thing up.
