Is Seau a good fit?
Desperate to acquire players of strong character in hopes of avoiding their usual late-season meltdown, the Dolphins traded a conditional 2004 draft pick for linebacker Junior Seau, who was selected to 12 Pro Bowls in his 13 seasons with the Chargers. But how does he fit? Seau, 34, no longer has the speed to play outside linebacker, and the Dolphins, who play a 4-3 defense, aren't going to move Zach Thomas out of the middle.
Seau, who was an All-America at USC, might be a legend in Southern California, but he is also quick to point the finger at teammates when things aren't going well, a habit that doesn't wear well when the speaker is past his prime. If he pipes up like that on his new team, he'll be a cancer.
Griese waiting in wings:
It was Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt and offensive coordinator Norv Turner who took the ball out of Ricky Williams' hands in the fourth quarter and allowed the Patriots to come back and upset the Dolphins in the regular-season finale, denying Miami a postseason berth. But Jay Fiedler, whose five-week midseason absence (broken thumb) kept the Dolphins from running away with the AFC East in the first place, is under the most pressure now that Brian Griese is here.
The aloof, ****y Griese wasn't well-liked in Denver, but he's a better pocket passer than Fiedler. It's Fiedler's job to lose, but with Wannstedt also on the firing line this season, Griese could be back in the saddle soon.
