Here is a look at ten players that need immediate address once the season concludes and the league new year begins.
1-Lamar Miller
Impending free agent
Re-sign or let go?
That is a big question to ask. In this day and age of the NFL the running back position is considered to be interchangeable. Very few teams have single featured franchise running backs. For the Dolphins, the question will be Miller’s potential and production vs. his salary demands.
2-Derrick Shelby
Impending free agent
Re-sign or let go?
If I’m the Dolphins I’m keeping Shelby.
Shelby is starting to come on strong now that he is seeing far more action on the field since Cameron Wake’s injury.
3-Olivier Vernon
Impending free agent
Vernon has been stellar the last month of the season. On Sunday against the Ravens he registered 2.5 sacks to bring his season total to 6.5. For his career, Vernon has 28 sacks with 11 of those coming in his 2013 sophomore season
Re-sign or let go?
If I’m the Dolphins I’m letting him go.
4-Cameron Wake
$9.8 million cap number
Wake is on the other side of 30 and is starting to break down. Earlier this season Wake dealt with hamstring issues, then he tore his Achille’s.
Restructure or release?
If the Dolphins release or trade Wake they will save over $8 million on the salary cap and carry less than $2 million in dead money. That $8 mill pays for Miller and Shelby. The Dolphins would be very wise to approach Wake about a restructure to his contract that will drive that cap number down without hurting the team in future years.
5-Jordan Cameron
$9.5 million cap number
When Cameron was signed by the Dolphins it was a good indication that the Dolphins finally realized the need for a big red-zone/seam threat tight end.
Restructure or release?
Miami will save $7.5 million by letting the tight-end go and that is the route I would go as well.
6-Dion Jordan
$6 million cap hit
bust bust bust bust
Release or retain?
I will cut my losses and move on. The Dolphins would save around $3 million. The expression "fu.k on" comes to mind.
7-Greg Jennings
$5.5 million cap hit
Greg Jennings was a big mistake for the Dolphins. This is a Joe Philbin player by far. I don't know who's worse legedu Naane or greg Jennings.
Release or retain?
The Dolphins will eat about $1 million in dead money should they release him but will save $4 million and there is no way that Jennings comes close to warranting that kind of salary.
No brainer, cut his asc!
8-Rishard Matthews
Impending free agent
Matthews has had a career season in 2015 and has really parlayed his time on the field into a new contract come next season. The question is whether it will be in Miami.
Resign or let go?
The Dolphins have limited options here given the money they have tied up on offense. At some point in the next two years Miami will have to re-sign Jarvis Landry and that won’t be cheap. Matthews is a good football player but he isn’t great.
I think Miami should do whatever it takes to sign this guy and have the WR set in tact for next season. This is Charles Clay scenario all over again. A WR starved team like NE would turn this guy into a star.
9-Branden Albert
$10.15 million against the cap
Albert has battled injuries since his arrival in Miami. Last year he ended the season on IR and this year began the season injured.
Restructure or release?
This is a tough one folks!
The Dolphins don’t have a lot of options here. If they released him they would eat over $5 million while saving about $5 million making it a wash but the Dolphins would be hard pressed to replace him. Add to that the line issues the team currently has and Miami has only one real option. Restructuring his contract.
10-Brent Grimes
$9.5 million cap hit
Grimes is unquestionably the best cornerback Miami has on the roster. His salary however is too high for the production that Grimes is starting to put on the field. At his best, Grimes is worth every penny but more and more Grimes is starting to show signs of age. His production this year has been inconsistent but he still is one of the best defenders on the team.
Restructure or release?
To think the Dolphins may part with Grimes is hard to fathom. The Dolphins have no other corners ready to step up to a starting role and the Dolphins are already trying to find a suitable corner to start opposite him. If I’m the Dolphins I’m approaching him about a contract restructure that will benefit both the team and Grimes.
