The Dolphins fell to 7-6 today after losing the Ravens today. The Dolphins were up 10 and the Ravens had a 1st with about two minutes left and they had to go 98 yards for a touchdown, after that it was all downhill for Miami.
It has gotten to the point where I think it is time for the Dolphins to move on from Joe Philbin, here is every reason why:
1 What is Joe?
What is Joe? Does he have an identity? What is to be expected from a Joe Philbin team? This team isn’t great running the ball, passing the ball, on special teams, defense, what does Joe add to the roster? Joe Philbin has had three years to build his roster, what is special about it? Joe Philbin has a .500 record with a roster that has the talent to be a lot better. He is constantly average.

2 He loves time outs
Specifically, Joe used all of his timeouts against the ravens while it was a one possession game and there was about three minutes left. That is very poor game management. Add in the Lions and Packers games and it is clear Joe Philbin gets “queasy” near the end of a game and starts to panic, timeouts are very important when it comes to winning close games, something Joe Philbin can’t do.

3 Joe Philbin’s teams can’t close out a game.
Heart breakers like the Lions, Packer, and Broncos are unacceptable as a third year coach. In his three years as a head coach, Joe Philbin is 11 and 13 in games decided by ten points or less. That stat tells us more than his 22-23 record can. The Dolphins can’t win close games, that is on the head coach.

4 “We play the best players”
Over his three years as the coach, it has seemed like Joe Philbin hated rookies and rarely made a change to the starting lineup. In 2012, Joe refused to let Lamar Miller take snaps behind Reggie bush, instead they thought that Daniel Thomas with his 3.6 yards a carry and a long of 20 could get the Job done. In 2013 Philbin decided Jamar Taylor, Will Davis, and Michael Thomas weren’t as good as Nolan Carroll who was average at best. In 2014 Philbin thought that Ellerbe was a better play than Jelani Jenkins, who has a good shot at the probowl. He also thought that Brandon Gibson was better than Jarvis Landry who didn’t get his chance until Gibson got hurt.

5 The Dolphins refuse to have a balanced offense
In 2012 the Dolphins were 23rd in passing play percentage at 55.19%. Since then the Dolphins were #3 last year and are currently 13th in passing plays per game this year. Out of the 24 playoff teams in 2012 and 2013, 8 have been in the top 13 in pass play percentage. The key to being a successful football team is running the ball, whether it is Mike Sherman or Bill Lazor, a Joe Philbin football team is unable to establish a running game, even with Daniel Thomas, Lamar Miller, and Ryan Tannehill averaging atleast 4 yards a carry. When the Dolphins were 26th in pass play attempts, Reggie Bush averaged 4.3 yards per carry. Over the last two years as the starter, Lamar has averaged 4.4 yards a carry. The Dolphins are better at running the ball but still refuse to run the ball as much, a very head scratching decision by the coaching staff.

6 Joe Philbin can’t motivate a football team
Mike Wallace said that the team had to try harder this year. Philbin can’t light a fire under his team. He has a very dull approach to the game, a team plays with the attitude of their coach. While there aren’t stats to prove just how true this is,just watch the game. This team is always flat to start games. The Dolphins have never been higher than 23rd in first half points under Philbin. Now that Bill Lazor is involved the offense is third in second half points, still lacking to put together a complete game on offense.

7 He also hasn’t been able to show he if he can outsmart other coaches
Over the last three years, only one team has finished in the bottom six in fourth down conversions atleast twice. In fact, the team has been in the bottom six all three years and that is the Miami Dolphins. Two different OCs, one head coach. Some teams have switched OCs atleast once, still didn’t finish in the bottom six more than once. Philbin is unable to give his team that one play it needs to either ice a game or keep a drive going. Philbin hasn’t proven he can pull out a trick play or two while catching the other coach sleeping.

8 He can’t defend his starting QB
After the Dolphins started one and two, Philbin started an unneeded QB controversy. After two bad games from Tannehill, he has been on fire all season. Philbin and others seemed to give up on a QB in a new system. Since then, Tannehill has been on fire and is the only reason why Philbin has kept his job this time. Philbin has never done Tannehill no favors, no receivers in 2012. Once he got okay wide receivers, offensive lines of all time in 2013 along with one of the worst gameplans I have ever seen including the “GO-Go” special. In 2014, Philbin seemed to lose faith in Tannehill just for it to come back and blow up in his face.

9 Too many mistakes on defense
The Dolphins have made many very dumb mistakes on defense, while this is very much Kevin Coyle’s fault, Joe has to step in at some point and change something. Phillip Wheeler covering tightends on the two yard line, Cam Wake and Oliver Vernon covering running backs and tight ends, Dolphins DBs playing off of every receiver by about ten years, or the defensive unable to make a stop under two minutes because of prevent defense. Joe Philbin needs to see these things and make a change. He is unable to diagnose issues and address them.

10 Losing record in December
In the month of Decemember, Philbin is 5-6 in the Month of December, the most important month of the season. To make it worse, the Dolphins are 1-3 in the last two weeks of the season. A good coach needs to win big games. The teams the Dolphins played in those four games have a combined record of 32-32. Philbin was unable to beat average teams when it mattered the most.

After each loss, Joe Philbin would say something along the lines of “We have to do better as a team.” When is your team finally going to play better, Joe? I think most fans are tired of waiting, especially with a roster that seems to be consistently underachieving. With his third season almost complete, at best Joe Philbin will be .500 at best when it is all said and done. You don’t survive as a .500 coach in the NFL and I believe it is time for the Dolphins to move on.

Jeff Ireland was the biggest problem with the Miami Dolphins in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, it's Joe Philbin.

Steve Ross desperately needs to find a good coach, and I think he should try it RIGHT NOW. Fire Joe and give Bill Lazor a tryout.

Philbin's time out management, and delays in making adjustments are most annoying as a fan. His demeanor is too calm and serene. I want someone with passion for the game but with the cold calculus of a serial killer.

"I have to do a better job coaching".

When is Philbin actually going to start coaching better instead of just saying it every week?

I'm done with this team this year. See ya next year. Like I said a while back, I'd rather have 8-8 and no playoffs than 9-7 and no playoffs. Looks like I'm getting my wish.

Just to play devil's advocate here are my top 10 reasons why Joe Philbin should get a fourth year as head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

1. Continuity

2. Responsible for culture change

3. Loyal yet accountable

4. Detail oriented

5. Leads by example

6. Composed demeanor

7. Exudes professionalism

8. Has coached a competitive team with subpar talent

9. Tannehill's fate is tied to his

10. He's a really nice guy

Honestly I don't subscribe to all of those, just thought a counter argument was justified. Still a season left to play out fellas, and call me crazy but 10 wins is very much a real possibility. Try to stay positive and never ever give up hope.

Playing devil's advocate to your devil's advocacy

1. Continuity is bad if it is continually bad.

2. He was here when the culture became bad in the first place.

3. Maybe, but taking accountability and yet not showing any change indicates it's either lip service or he is incapable of correcting the problems.

4. Too many times this team has come out flat and committed dumb penalties to consider Philbin truly detail-oriented.

5. Not sure what example he leads by. If it's mediocrity, then, yes, he definitely is giving the team his personality.

6. So composed that there never is a sense or urgency or ability to rise to the occasion.

7. Eh, possibly. Really, I'd kind of have to work with him to see that. Might be professional in front of a camera. Might also be wishy-washy.

8. Depends on whether you consider losing big games to teams that had inferior talent (Bills, Jets last year, etc.) being competitive with subpar talent. He had the best QB in a number of those games; usually that will carry you if the talent is close, and there are a number of Pro Bowl players (Wake, Wallace, Pouncey, Starks, Albert) on this team, too.

9. I used to think that, but I think Tannehill actually has performed better now that Sherman is gone and he's been able to explore new ideas of how to utilize his talent.

10. Seems to be. But a coach can be too nice. Might be a great assistant coach who just isn't cut out to lead. I think Wannstedt was the same kind of guy.

Ok I'll play the devil's devils advocate.

Philbin gets fired (we're not getting Harbaugh) Who do you want that's available? The answer- No one. It would be a crapshoot all over again. As much as I hate to say it, let's give this regime one more season to try to acquire some actual talent in the off season. Then if that doesn't work, blow the whole thing up, Head Coach, OC and DC.

Same arguement people had for keeping Sparano. Harbaugh is not he only guy that can coach football better than philbin

How about we finish the friggin' season before coming to such brash conclusions.
