-Will Allen vs. Larry Fitzgerald-Allen has been our most consistent bright spot in out defensive backfield, and many of us think he could be the next highly touted CB in the league. Well, this game reminds me of when we played the Vikes back in the Moss-Carter-Culpepper days, when they went 15-1, and Madison and Surtain stepped up and bent but didnt break, and we lost something like 13-7 or something low-scoring like that.
-Jake Long vs. 'Zona DE's-Neither of these guys is anywhere near the caliber of Shaun Ellis who schooled our boys last week for 4 sacks. That is why I'd like to see how this plays out; this game will be a better metric, IMO, as to how good Jake Long is. As a #1 overall LT, he needs to be able to hold up against a DL like this.
-Ronnie Get More Touches-Our biggest problem with last week is that we threw damn near 50 passes. We all knew coming into the season that we needed to focus on our anticipated strength, the run game. Brown got very limited touches, and it may very well have been because he was a little banged up, but nevertheless he looked good when he did get it. I wouldn't even mind seeing him lineup in the slot, he has better hands than half of our WRs.
-Davone Bess get more reps and touches-One of our biggest bright spots (at least for me) was seeing Bess in action with the ball in his hands. He may very well be the most explosive returner we've had...well arguably ever. Aside from his play in the return game, there were great things said about him during camp and the preseason...so I say why not see if he can be our Eddie Royal?
-Well designed screen plays-I want to reiterate that I think our RBs were underutilized against the Jets. I think we panicked a little when we fell behind and tried to get into a shootout which is the antithesis of what we should do. I remember thinking, why don't we run designed screens? Ronnie did great things with little dump offs last year. That being said...NOT ON 3rd and 10!
-Better game management-Let's face it, we used our timeouts ineffectively last week. We were down to 1 timeout far too early in the second half. It is understandable considering we're a young team with a lot of guys trying to get on the same page, but taking the same youth into consideration, I think we win that game if we have 2 or 3 timeouts and didnt have to be so frantic on that final drive...of course that's all moot, but that's how I feel.
-More blitzing!-Channing Crowder borders on insanity, kinda like Junior Seau, the guy wrestles wild boar...Do you think any QB is going to feel comfortable if a guy like that is bearing down on him? Not to mention Joey Porter is a rabid blitzer himself. I understand that our secondary is weak and coaches may feel it is too risky, but I contend that it would actually be our best bet since it is our safeties who are weakest...force the QB to throw earlier so our CBs can make a play. Plus Warner is a sitting duck who fumbles, I am going to break something if we don't send somebody early and often.
-Better run defense-Perhaps the emphasis was on containing Brett Favre last week, but Thomas Jones absolutely gashed us numerous times. Edge may have lost a step, but he still has great vision and power, and can still rip off 12-15 yard runs if we give him room. I want to see more push up the middle, and quicker gap-filling by the linebackers.
-Ernest Wilford in the Red Zone-So we have a WR pushing 6'5" with a muscular build, and our target in the endzone was Ted Ginn who is under 6 foot? Remember how we used Orande Gadsden a while back? Throw that dang ball up and make him make a play...nothing bolsters confidence like TDs. You'd be surprised, perhaps it'd give him the swagger and confidence in his skills that he has been lacking his entire career. 2nd and goal, fade to Wilford...period.
-VICTORY!-Enough said.
