Diehard Phinatic!
1. GM Jeff Ireland said Philbin has “100 percent … total authority” to hire his coaching staff. All Dolphins coaches will interview with Philbin and will be considered, but expect Philbin to look into bringing some of his friends from Green Bay down to Miami. Among those who could be considered as coordinators – Packers linebackers/assistant head coach Winston Moss, safeties coach Darren Perry, defensive line coach Mike Trgovac and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements.
Also expect Mike Sherman to get a serious look as offensive coordinator if he doesn’t get the Bucs’ head coaching job. Sherman and Philbin coached together at Tulane in 1984, Sherman hired Philbin as an assistant offensive line coach with Green Bay in 2003 and is one of Philbin’s closest friends.
2. Philbin will hire an offensive coordinator, and plans to let the OC call the plays, although that hasn’t been completely determined yet. Philbin didn’t call plays in Green Bay in his five years as OC. Philbin also has the blessing to decide on the offensive and defensive scheme, though expect the Dolphins to stick with a 3-4 defense since most of their personnel fits that D. Philbin reportedly has a four-year deal.
3. There really is only one priority this offseason: Finding a franchise quarterback. Guys such as Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn and Robert Griffin III will all be in play for the Dolphins. If Sherman is hired, perhaps Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be considered after playing for Sherman in college. The Dolphins aren’t allowed to talk about Manning and Flynn until they become free agents – otherwise that’s tampering – but they’re preparing to make a move. Ireland has Stephen Ross’ blessing to get it done, no matter the cost.
4. Philbin says he won’t necessarily bring the Packers’ offense to Miami. Philbin said he’s “just getting my feet wet” in terms of evaluating the roster. “I think it’s a mistake to just take the Green Bay Packer playbook and plop it on the table here in South Florida,” he said. “One of your responsibilities of coaching is to put your players in the best position to succeed.”
“I don’t think football is an overly complicated game,” he added. “As offensive coordinator in Green Bay I used to stand up in front of the offense and ask them if they could count to four. Because if you can count to four, you can play in the Packer offense.”
5. Philbin’s approach to coaching: “We’re going to be demanding, not demeaning. So we’re going to coach these guys extremely hard and be very detail oriented. Going to be thorough, but not going to leave any stone unturned to help these guys develop and get better. And at the same time we want to enjoy the relationship, enjoy the ride while we’re doing it.”
