A champagne toast is in order. Raise a glass for the 1972 Miami Dolphins, a team that has finally succeeded in diminishing its own perfect season.

The latest silly salvo directed at the undefeated New England Patriots comes from Mercury Morris, now 61, who went on the radio the other day and spoke his apparently deteriorating mind.

"They win on February 3, and they're the second-best team in the history of the NFL," said Morris. "We're the first team. ... If they win, they're going to be the second team." So there.

Of course, every team deserves to be judged in the context of its time. That said, a 19-0 season — New England's record should it win the Super Bowl — would be more impressive than Miami's mark, 17-0. Anyone not named Mercury Morris can do the math on that one.

Who sayed they are winning the superbowl?
Until that clock is on zero.
1972 is the only undefeated team.

What that "journalist" likes to leave out of that article is the fact that the 1972 Dolphins were #1 on D, #1 on O, scored the most and allowed the fewest points, #1 in special-teeams, and had to win a road playoff game in pittsburgh to make it to the superbowl.

and like Mario said... 'til the pats beat the giants, the 72 fins are still the last perfect team.

Blah Blah Blah! I'm so sick of all this stuff every single year when there's a team trying to go undefeated. "Oh, the 72 phins are just bitter old men who can't handle someone trying to match/beat their record". The press eats this up because they love to cause turmoil and because they have nothing to cover in these two weeks until the SB happens. You know what, they have a record that nobody has has matched. They have a right to want that record to stay in place and not be matched/beaten. Anybody who is in that type of position and says otherwise is full of it. Heck, do you really think Marino didn't care about several of his records going down this year to Favre? He was very coordial about it and handled it very professionally, but I guarantee behind the scenes he was rooting against him from doing this. Will the 72' undefeated season ever be matched/broken, of course. All records are eventually broken. Let's just hope it's not this year and not the Pats who do it.

Actually, David Hyde of the S-S just posted an article on the website stating much the same thing. And I do agree with you, 100%.

BTW, could anyone tell me how to do a short link?? I'd be most appreciative.:bighug:

This was a really poorly thought out article. As Greenberg (Jets fan) said on Mike & Mike, you can't compare eras. The difference in the size and conditioning of the players has already been mentioned thousands of times already. But what about the medical advances? Were there MRIs back in 1972? Hyperbolic chambers? Nutritional supplements, both legal and illegal? Most NFL players today probably have personal trainers and gyms in their mansions. In 1972 I'd be surprised if they had more than a set of weights.

We can also talk about the rule changes. If the Patriots WRs had to play in 1972 they would be surprised at the mugging they would receive, both at the line of scrimmage and all the way down the field. 112 catches? Not a chance.

But most of all I don't recall the '71 Dolphins being able to analyze their team after the SB blowout loss to Dallas, and then go shopping in free agency to add two of the fastest players in the NFL to the weakest position on their team. Miami was free to draft new players, but the odds that they'd crack the roster of the AFC champs their first year wasn't good. New England was able to get players in their prime that were ready to step in and star immediately.

19-0. Impressive? Hell yes. Better than 17-0 in 1972? Nope, but not because it's worse, it just can't be realistically compared. It goes beyond apples and oranges... it's more like trying to compare armies from the Civil War against those that fought at Normandy. Different eras=incomparable.

Well we can't forget that the '72 Dolphins didn't have a lying and cheating head coach with video tapes helping them out either.

Morris is 100% right!

Also I will go a bit further by saying that the Patriots like Barry Bonds should have a big fat asterisk next to their name in the books. The NFL should of had striped them of their victory against the Jets whom they were caught red handed cheating against.

In my book their will only be 1 true undefeated team, and that is the 1972 Phins baby. Lets hope that the Giants serve the Patriots a big steaming bowl of karma on February 3rd.

TOTALLY AGREE!!! I've been saying this for a long time....just not here. You can't compare them.

I personally don't care if they 19-0. Thats right I said it, if they get the record good for them ( sarcasm ).

But you know what, record or no record I'm still gonna say **** the Pats 'til the day I die.

who cares anymore, they played in two different eras, two different rules with passing the ball, defenses were better then, offenses are better now, they played six preseason game instead of four, 14 regular season games instead of 16, you cant compare them, you cant compare the 1972 dolphins to the great packer teams of the 60"s because the league was not the same then, if they win congrats welcome to the home of the undefeated, in another ten or thirty years someone else will do it again and you wont be able to compare them to the pats or phins,

Lots of good posts in this thread! I hate the Patsies too. Unfortunately for us, they'll probably win the Super Bowl and we'll never hear the end of "the greatest football team ever" crap from ESPN and the clones. To me, they'll always have an asterisk next to their record. They were caught cheating the first game of the season. Do they still let you keep playing in blackjack if that happens? On a test? In any other sport?

If I was Don Shula I would reserve a nice suite in Glendale and invite all the reporters over...then when the Giants have the Superbowl locked up Mercury Morris, Csonka and the guys can break out the champagne and the tell the Patriots to GFY!!!!!
