I mentioned this in another thread but it probably deserves to be isolated. About 10 days ago a YouTube poster uploaded the 1973 season (January 1974) Super Bowl in 14 segments, our 24-7 win over the Vikings. It's the full game, not merely highlights, and a great view of that team at its peak, albeit a year removed from 17-0.

Classic announcing crew also, CBS with Ray Scott, Pat Summerall and using Bart Starr.

Notice that kickoffs were from the 40 in those days, yet the straight ahead kicker Fred Cox managed depth to only the 7 yard line.

I recognize these names more than the current players...
 
wow i wonder if i ripped them all and put them on a dvd how that would work out
 
fun to watch. it's been so long since this team was elite. it's amazing how bad the past 10 years have been.
 
That team was alot better than the 72' team.
Zonk was a monster.
Remember watching that game,like it was yesterday.
Watch that defense play and you will understand why Zack Thomas and
JT are not Hall of Famers.

Yeah, I went to a high school game two weeks ago and the kickers were booming it into the end zone from the 40. I was reflecting on the '70s and wondering how it wasn't one touchback after another. But at the time it didn't seem out of place. I have a vague memory of being opposed to it when they pushed it back to the 35. :lol:

Otherwise, the aspect that surprised me was our tailback positioning, not nearly as deep as my memory from that era. Mercury is crowded fairly tight behind Csonka. I'm a USC alum and I think my mental image of Marcus Allen in Student Body Right obscured my earlier impression of the Dolphin glory years, and I placed Mercury about 7-8 yards deep when in reality it was much closer.
 
Great post. The Dolphins crushed what was one of the best Super Bowl losing teams of all time, relative to their peers.
